Has your son shot a gun yet???? If no then I think you may be jumping the gun on taking him hunting with one. I spent years shooting a BB gun at pop cans, then shooting a shot gun at pop cans, then just following dad threw the woods before I every took a gun along and shot something (or should I say at something) :)

Beretta 391 Youth Model 20 ga, 24" barrel and cut down stock

maybe Ive just had some junk .410s but it seems to me that the recoil on a .410 is pretty harsh Im not so sure he might not be better off with a 20 guage.
I do know however that macks prarie wings carries some non tox .410 shells

My sons first gun was a Mossburg 20 ga. youth model. When he got older we sent in for the longer stock. (I think it was only $30 or $40)
He is 19yo and still loves that gun.
I bought my other son a Rem. 870 youth mod. We never had any trouble with it but it just seemed cheap compaired to the Mossburg.
If your that worried about the gun being too big, maybe your son is still too young. Whats the hurry? 7 is pretty young to be shooting live ammo.
A 410 is worthless in my opinion.

I have a Mossberg Youth 20 gauge, it kicks like a mule. After an afternoon shooting skeet, my should is usually pretty sore. We also have an old "?" model 20 gauge that my dad bought for my older brother, it is a single shot with a hair trigger, none working safety, but almost no recoil whatsoever. Even though your son is small now, it won't be but a few yrs before he is going to want something a bit bigger then a 410 or 28 gauge. One option is one of those "gun kits" that come with three different sizes of barrels, or just go for a youth model 870. Change out the stock when needed. Or let your wife shoot it!

Several years ago I gave my oldest grandson a 20 gauge Franchi auto with a factory youth stock. It's quite a bit lighter than a comparable Remington or Mossberg, and all the kids have learned with it. 11 y/o is about ready to go to adult size gun, so I guess the little gun will go into closet until the 5 y/o is ready. It has been a great first shotgun.

I started out on a Winchester Ranger 20 ga Youth Model. They were hard to find, but I think Dad and I bought it back then for about $300.

The stock it a little shorter, and the action starts further back and when you shuck it, well, it's designed for shorter arms.

I STILL love that shotgun, and likely I'll keep it a long time. I can shoot with it still, I'm WAY faster with it on trap and the like, but it doesn't have the knockdown power of my Ithica Mag 10, the Benelli SBE, or the trusty Win. Ranger 12 ga.

BTW, I think I was 10 when I got the youth model... fit me great.

BEEN THERE...DONE THAT ONE...on dis deal!

What the poster said bout the hammered guns for youngsters has a lot of merit. Even knowing that I went ahead and started my Grandson out on one from New England Arms. I did so as he has been raised with guns and started at a very early age. At 4 even the Youth Model 13" stock needed to be CUT DOWN a couple of inches.

He shot the .410 for thru last duck season and he announced that he was ready for a .20 gauge and one that " SHOOTS MORE THAN ONCE ". His two main kid hunt'n buddies are 12 and 13 and they have recently graduated off 20 gauges and are now on 12 gauges and this had a lot to do with this announcement.

I looked long and hard for a Double Barrel Youth 20 Gauge and most of them were VERY EXPENSIVE or at least for me. I ran across a Youth 20 gauge Side by Side and the price was right. They also had a Youth 20 Gauge Over and Under. These guns are manufactured by Stoeger.

I settled on the Over and Under as it " felt better "! It has turned out to be a good decision. The Over and Under is simple and safe and it fits him well. The stock is still a bit long but this time there will be no need to cut it down as the kid is swin'g this gun very well. We shot a LOT of reloads and then broke in on some Dove Hunts. He has made several Teal Hunts with it and is knock'n stuff outta da sky.

He watches The Outdoor Channel religiously and right out of the box carries the gun open and across his shoulder just like the guys he sees on T.V.! I've always been one to limit the TV time but when he comes over to the house for a sleep over we plop ourselves down on the couch and watch the Hunting Shows till we go to sleep.

Last 2 Teal Hunts he could not go along. I had the gun at the house and had a 9 month old pup that had just come out off the FF Table. I took the pup along in order to start get'n her used to the hunt. I was want'n to DROP ONE RIGHT THERE in front of her. I had her on a short lead. A blue wing flashed by and I raised the lil O/E up to my shoulder with one hand while keeping the young pup at SIT. The duck splashed and I released the pup.

I have NEVER been able to shoot and make sure the young ones stay on SIT...! Now I've gotta get ME ONE OF THESE!
