Could it be that the 2008 High Point Derby Dog will be decided by an old western, OK Corral type shoot out at Red River?

I certainly do not want to jinks either dog, but the competition is getting exciting for those of us watching the race.

Based on results posted for this weekend Pink proved to be a mortal derby dog and did not place at Southern Arizona leaving him with 65 points total.

Punch got the blue ribbon at Mobile bumping his total to 67 points pre Punch’s handler and fans. However, I have counted and recounted and unless results have been posted incorrectly on EntryExpress, RFTEntry and/or in the Retriever News or omitted from the same, I can find only 66 derby points for Punch.

While there is a mathematical possibility the Punch can lock up high point derby dog the weekend of Dec 5th should he pick up another 5 points and Pink have a second consecutive poor trial, but that would seem unlikely. Most likely Punch and Pink will be within five points of each other after the weekend of Dec 5th.

So will the 2008 High Point Derby Dog be decided by a face to face shoot out at the Red River trial on December 13th? If so that would be too good to miss so I have book a room in Bonham just in case.

That would be fun to watch. There is a good possibility that the youngster, Ammo, might be in Texas in Dec also. It would be interesting to see if the girl can hang with the top derby dogs of 2008.

There is a possibilty of another trial the week after Red River, South Central Oklahoma Retriever Club.
It is the weekend before.....

Damn I better book my room if there is going to be a bigger attendance than normal at Red River....

Pink is a lady, not a guy. And I agree on your count, according to the AKC report of points, Punch should have 66, not 67.

How many trials have Pink & Punch each run?

according to whats posted on akc, rftentry and ee, pink has been entered in 31 total trials of which she may not have run all due to being in season as scott has stated. she has placed or jammed in 26.

according to the same sources punch has been entered in 46 trials. there are 4 others which had notation of a scratch so i did not count those, and some of these 46 may or may not have been scratched also.
punch has placed or jammed in 27.

give pink 15 more times at bat and see who ends up being high point derby dog........

According to the cumulative stats from EE and RFTE Pink has been entered in 30 derby stakes including Spokane RC 09/28/2007 and Southeast Washington RC 10/05/2007. I would be surprised if any dog was scratched a few times and at least some of those scratches did not come to the attentionof the Event Secretary. However, of the 30 trials listed for Pink the only ones where SHE did not place or JAM are:
03/01/2008 - Willamette Valley Retriever Club
03/07/2008 - Rogue Valley Retriever Club
05/30/2008 - Shasta Cascade Retriever Club
10/03/2008 - Southeast Washington Retriever Club
10/31/2008 - Southern Arizona Retriever Club
Finishing 25 of 30 starts is most impressive but given that Pink was scratched in three of these five trials that is 25 finishes in 27 starts for 65 points and 2.4 points per start. That is some stout.

Using the same data sources, Punch is credited with running 45 derby stakes also starting fall of 2007. Again I would be surprised if there were not a few scratches that did not get recorded as such, and, in fact, I find three not noted as scratched that Punch could not possibly have run. So best I can determine Punch has finished 27 of 42 starts with 66 points or 1.57 points pre start. Also quite impressive if not up to Pink’s 2.4 points per start.

While total points and points per start make for good discussion there are still too many factors involved to make exact comparisons. Bottom line, both are exceptional marking dogs and both are obviously very well trained as are Louie, Win, Juice, Canaille and others.

Glad to hear that Pink is enjoying some home time. They all need a break and time at home. So glad to have met you and Pink. I am rooting for Pink she is a super gal.

This has been a close race from the beginning. If you look at both dogs records. Both dogs started running Derby's before they were One year of age. Both dogs got their first points at 13 months old and both dogs made the Derby List at 16 months old. What an exciting race!
