Okay my buddy calle dme and said someone dumped a dog out and asked if i wanted it. I said sure as I had none at the time. She appears to be about 3 years old. She is a big black lab female. She will come when i whistle and let me pet her but if i raise my voice in the least she runs to the pen i set up for her. My wife let her out of the pen yesterday and she ran from her. Any ideas or tips that might could help me?

Treats to gain her trust! Maybe put her on a leash and whenever she comes up to you whether called or not give her one. It will take some time! She may have been abused by a woman since she ran from your wife. We had one that didn't like guys in hats but with my dad coming to pick us up for the weekends she got used to it. She could have been an awesome frisbee dog but she had apparently been beaten with one cuz everytime you picked one up she would cower and run.

I rescued a little Jack Russell female that was afraid to go through a doorway. Ducked for cover at the sound of any door closing including the refrigerator or load noise! It took many months of patience and tender care but she eventually came to trust me and my husband. Always was watchful of strangers and would attack a loud car or truck if I had not kept her on a leash when we were outside the fence. She was one sweet dog. Be patient. Spend quiet time with her. No rough housing. Maybe have your wife be the caretaker at feeding time.

Good luck. You may find she is a gem in the rough.

My favorite female I own was a wreck when I got her. She crawled with her tail pulled up against her stomach and would tremble just at the sound of a human voice. I would just sit down on the floor and talk to her in a gentle voice andf DID NOT try to make her do anything. After a week or so she finally crawled over to me and I just gave her a gentle ear scratch while talking to her in a quiet voice. Next time she did that she crawled all the way in my lap and just rolled over which is a dogs way of saying I submit to you. I finally got a tennis ball and rolled it away from us sitting. One time she went and got it. I PRAISED her shamelessly. Next time she ran and got it and her tail came out. From there on it was all down hill she just blossomed. I just had to earn her TRUST that I was a good guy and if you ever saw Baby you would NEVER believe that this was the same dog.

Got a pup that was about 16 weeks old. I think she must have been neglected because she was afraid to be around people. Didn't cower, just ran and avoided. I would come home from school and spend time around her and she still avoided. Eventually, I was able to get close enough to her to pet her. (after a few weeks) She must have liked it, because not long after, she became my buddy and the best Brittany I ever had. The best all around bird dog I have ever owned. She could point a Quail 50 yards away...saw her do it more than once. Saw her jump a log with a quail in her mouth and point in mid air at the same time. She was my buddy and a great hunting partner.

Once had two, 6 month old littermates given to us which were granddaughters of some great Field Champions. We took them and they turned out to be some of the nicest females we ever had. They were both very neglected when we got them - one only weighed about 20-25 lb with a large frame on her. Wet the floor if you touched them, had been stuck in a kennel all their life. Would have been some awesome hunt test dogs if we had recognized it them, SHR titled at 11 months and are now working in drug detection.

earn her trust with food then praise most rescue dogs have been abused or worse neglected with out proper socialzation dogs will be people shy and even become agressive, allways remember that dogs feed off our energy as pack animals they look to there leader for how they are supposed to act in everyday situations, shower the dog with love and take it everywhere that you can an older dog will take more time than a pup but it is still posible to undo the harm that was done. good luck
