Shopping---
Just started force to pile-lining and casting drills with our 11mos YLM--He does fine on commands BUT shops the pile--One other dog I had that did this I quit using pile and put bumpers out in a line-- he quit and no longer shops.
Today I am going to throw bumpers much closer to me so I can get on him to Fetch first bumper and reinforce NO more quickly- any suggestions appreciated.

I had a simailar problem with my ylf. First of all I started as youu have by putting the bumpers in a line, now if the dog has been properly ffd as it gets to the first bumper command fetch theoretically the dog should fetch it up. every time the dog goes to the pile comand fetch as the dog gets there, the dog should get used to grabbing the first one it sees and not shopping. A little bit of cc wont hurt at this point either.

Baumy suggested just using the Here whistle and i tried it this am- it worked-- not done with problem but on the right track- i don't like to nick when he's at pile for fear he might think he's getting nicked for fetching.

Have you tried having him on a long lead and just as he reaches the first bumper giving a strong "here" and a jerk on the lead to reel him right back in? Solved it for my dog.

Good luck

I use a strong verbal "HERE" command with a nick just as they get to the pile, then gradually work in the whistle command.

If he has been properly collar fetched then the nick is conditioned and he would know what the nick was for. It is about the timing with the command.

Walking fetch is done on lead. Teaching a dog to work a mini-pile is done with a checkcord. With the bumpers placed farther apart at first, the habit of picking the "first one" up is "physically taught"............not with the e-collar. There is no need to "fix things" when the correct "habit" is established first.

Shopping is caused by "expecting" it to NOT happen and then feeding the anxiety by using corrections which are difficult to time and not specific enough. It is easier to teach the dog the proper way to work a pile than it is to make him NOT shop after he starts.

Never had a problem with shopping regards, Jim
