This is real exciting news. Thank you for posting it. I'm glad to see some of you right wingers admit that Bush was wrong in his veto of the stem cell research bill. Another reason I'm happy not to have supported him. Bud

The type of stem cells that are being used here are from the fat in the dogs body, and new research is starting from fat cells in our own bodies to help with breast cancer.

Does anyone have any updates/experience with the Vet-Stem stem cell therapy? My 7 year old MH has been diagnosed with arthritis in one of his front carpel joints. I can handle that his competition days are over, but it kills me to see this noble animal (and best friend) limping in pain. I've contacted the U of MN about the regenerative cell therapy options and on the surface, he appears to be a good candidate. I'm hoping to schedule an appointment with one of the Orthopedic surgeons for a more detailed evaluation next week.

Any info is welcome!

Bud, are you saying you support the Great Alaskan Bush Co?

I heard that Patrick Johndrow supported them also.

Really, if this works, I've got lots of fat tissue they can use and a bad hip they can inject. Wonder if it would work for degenerative disk disease?

If they are using hyaluronic acid for horses, and I've heard it's successful, does anyone know why they aren't using it for dogs? Or are they?

And I'm in for the lipo-to-injection transplant! :D
Where do I sign up??

I have a prime candidate for this treatment. When my vet returns at the end of the month I am going to pursue this. I will certainly pass on the results. Rocket has a bad elbow due to injury and also has bad hips. If there is a possible relief for him I owe to him.

How old is Rocket now Kim? Wasn't Rocket running when I was running Cody?

I had to retire Yoda two years ago and his elbows are so bad now that he can barely walk. He is great otherwise. If I thought this would work I'd pony up the two grand, but I'm worried that at close to eleven he might be too old.

Monday July 12th Sophie will under go a bone marrow harvesting for stem cells. The implant will follow a few days later. Oddly enough she tore an ACL last week and so we will do a TPLO on her on tuesday. The stem cell replant will be for both elbows and possibly a hip. The rehab will be 6 months to 8months and if she does ever run again it will be Opens only. Sophie ran 4 Quals at 2yrs old-won 2 , 4th in one and failed the other. Sophie became an AFC before she was 4 yrs old and qualified for the NARCCS 2009. She has the God given talent to mark well and trains well- if she can't run then she will continue to sleep on my lap for 4 hours every night in the recliner, be my PFC(petting field champion) and live out her life in comfort. In 2006 I had her elbows arthoscopically cleaned and it is holding-the stem cell implant is to hope that we can rebuild cartlige and forego a further arthoscopy. This will be expensive- $8000 and up- but then that's what it costs me to go to 2 Nationals a year and I would rather have Sophie pain free that 2 contestants ribbons. My phone # 406 469-2206- if anyone wants to discuss this. Just don't call after 7pm-Sophie and I will be asleep. These dogs do not run on their elbows, they run on their hearts so once our elbows are painless we will come out and kick ass.

Sorry to hear about Sophie....we will miss seeing her at PPRC that following weekend....will you still be able to attend?

Rocket had his 13th birthday Apr 11. When he was 4 he had a nasty fall while going for a flyer downhill. He tore the supraspinatus tendon and injured his elbow. The tendon has healed, but the elbow gradually developed arthritis. It has gotten worse over the years. Needless to say, his dysplastic hips and 2 lumbar surgeries (my poor dog) were not the deciding factor regarding retirement, it was the elbow.
Now, he has 2 bad elbows. Both arthritic.
However, my Rocketman still has a twinkle in his eye, a burning desire for birds and immeasurable heart!

I am completely POed, but so long as our politicians make decisions based on the religious morality of the far right instead of informed, intelligent thinking this is not going to change.

Corey, can you explain, in layman’s terms the difference between autologous adipose-derived adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells? Also based on your knowledge on this subject, is it possible that a dog that was too arthritic to stand and walk could be chasing tennis balls within 48 hours of having the stem cells injected?

I do not doubt the potential of embryonic stem cells to provide cures for many health issues including arthritis in dogs. It is the time frames being used to hype this adult stem cell procedure that cause me to be skeptical of it.
Adipose stem cells are fat cells. Embryonic stem cells come form discarded 5 day old embryos (not these can also be genetically incorrect embryos that would have no chance of life as well). The big advantage with embryonic stem cells is that they have UNLIMITED potential as to what they can become. Adult stem cells of any type do not offer this advantage. While adult stem cells have great potential it is not as great as embryonic stem cells. That is in the simplest terms. As far as do I believe a dog, human or anything else is “cured” in 48 hours……NO. That is at the very best two cell cycles and not enough time to do much of anything; however, there certainly could be some beneficial effects in that short a period.
For the record I am not impressed with injected stem cells. It is one of the areas of research that is often used to point out the failures of stem cell use. Cell cycles are very complex and simply injecting them has not been the most successful method of use for stem cells. My much larger hopes lie in the growth and differentiation of stem cells in the lab to grow specific cells that can then be used (pancreatic cells for example)
That is about all I want to go into here. I will not debate the use of embryonic stem cells again, so post away with your comments.
You can't help the blind to see......unless maybe it is with stem cells;)

Today we aspirated and took bone marrow from Sophie's shoulder. On the 30th we will take the stem cells and infuse them in her elbows and in right stifel and right rear hip. Timing is such that she must not be trained for 6 months so we will not lose any time by doing a TPLO this friday and if necessary will do the other ACL in about two months. Since Sophie is 4yrs old the medical people at CSU are very optomistic that we will see a very theraputic result. This will be my last post as to this procedure and if I can help anyone with questions regarding this procedure then contact me email-alanson@earthlink.net
