With the price of new vehicles and all the BS involved with maintenance of a new truck we have decided that we are going to build/restore a 1964 fleetside. She has researched a bunch of old trucks and decided on this year and style. I am now on the hunt for a nice truck with a nice body that will be a good candidate to rework. It will be her daily driver and not a show truck but we are going to have power brake, steering, windows and AC. Simple small block 350 but she does want a manual trans. I have started the search and prices have been 200 bucks for scrap metal to crazy show money. I have built race cars and other stuff so a frame off custom sounds fun. My with is pretty handy and when we were first married would actully help wrench on the junk we used to drive and the would help onthe race car. If anyone has a line on one let me know. Thanks

My oldest brother used to have one of those trucks circa 63 or close to it, built like a tank with one of those real steel bumpers. One night the neighborhood drunk comes around the corner and clips the back of the truck, tears his car up from one end to another. the next morning we were looking at the steel bumper and trying to find a mark where he clipped the truck, hitting that thing was like hitting a steel girder. my nephew and I used to argue about who got to ride in the back to go to the gas station and pick up a case of "soda water" as we called it back in the day.....great times back then

Steve,

I assume you are aware of Hemmings.com and all of the sites where folks sell classic cars. I have a whole list of them if you need them.

I am looking at them all the time, I am in the market for a '70 Chevelle L78 that is already restored. I will let you know if I see a candidate for you.

I looked at something like that for a shop truck but all I see driving them are drug dealers, rappers and football players. She wants something that is custom and you would have to look a bit for just to find one. Besides our labor it will be better than a new truck and likely less money.

I saw one for the first time at the Ford dealership in Mehlville.
Not to far from you.
I thought it was some kind of joke.
It's real!!

Anyway, a frame off restoration is better than a new car.
Because it will be done RIGHT!!

BTW--There are several places east of you on I-55 before Springfield IL that have a lot of nice vintage P/U's.

Good luck.
My dream is a restored 52 F-100.

If I was gonna wrench again,, this is a truck I have always wanted!!
Just a brute!!

68 WM300 Dodge POWERWAGON (Military)

Gooser, my uncle has one of these. Not military but a Powerwagon. It was built as a sort of tow truck. He restored it once with a flat bed and painted dark green with black fenders. Now he is painting it red and white I believe.

Steve my dad and I restored 3 of these, two 65 and a 66 as I grew up. Look for rust in the floorboards under the air vents, in the front fenders just in front of the door and let me tell ya, finding original hoods and tailgates without a ripple will take some time. Their great trucks though and I have great memories of working on them with dad...

Couple crates in the back and you'll be set!

Steve,

The landscape company that I used to work for used a 64 Chev short bed as my bidding and greating clients truck. It was restored to daily driver condition about ten years ago and he just put a new 350 in it last year. This was purely a promotional vehicle, never even had a shovel in it.

I just called him and he said he wanted to sell it, I didn't ask him his price, but I'll PM you his email address. I'm sure he could email photos, ect.

John

Buy one already restored. You'll save thousands of dollars. Restoring one to daily driver/reliable condition will be costly.....Here's my Grandpa's 1949 Chev 3/4ton. Dad started it and didn't quite finish it before he passed. A good friend of his from Church put it back together last summer for next to nothing. This truck has 28K original Turkey farm miles. First car Dad ever drove, first car I ever drove and every cousin in the family ever drove......worth more because sentimental value....

Reality of old trucks, rotted body mounts, weakened bolts, old rubber parts all need to be removed to make a daily driver. This usually requires a frame off resto...

It sure was fun to press the starter on the floor for the first time since I was about 8 when it was last parked in our shop not running. Just really wish Dad could have been there....we spent many hours together working on this one.
