A few of us were talking the other day and asked where would we live if...

1. You had a limited budget (only one place).

2. You were passionate about trainng, running trials and even hunting your dog(s)?

Let's say you are retired and had a good fixed retirement, to allow for entry fees and licenses.

Western MT, not sure where yet but that is my dream.

Idaho...underrated hunting, very good dog training area, mild summers...

a close second Dallas -Fort Worth area same as above but the summers are brutal...and if you were a single male, you may not find a better cross section of the female element anywhere else....period...

I don't kmow those areas real well, but they would be near the top of the list for sure, what are the winters like, I would think winter training would be pretty hard to do.

I was thinking somewhere around the wyoming or colorado area.

Brad

Minnesota.

Plenty of trials/tests (with plenty of elite competition).

Plenty of high quality places to train and equal number of great dog clubs/training groups.

Plenty to hunt right here and if you ever need to you're close to the Dakotas for even more hunting opportunities.

Killed me to move out of KC , Missouri this March .Just enough snow for a white Christmas , hunting was awesome , and a days drive from even more hunting . And every door I knocked on let me train there .

Right where I am. Except for the rain and the occasional big storm in the winter there is plenty of good training ground around and the fishing and hunting are pretty hard to beat.

Interesting question--about 11 yrs ago my wife and I were at just that point- i had lived most of my dreams in AK for 25 yrs-- we were both retired and so we started traveling- looking for a place to move to-- imediately we checked off all states on bothe coasts-- then most of south- much pf SW and ended up with about 6 states on list-- wanted good transportation system, good fishing and hunting-place to ride out horses and my wife wanted to be closer to family- she won- we moved to a small farm in Wi. not perfect--BUT we can ride at home or state parks within 20 mi-hunt deer turkey morels and small game on farm- pheasant near by-see her folks-fish the Miss R.or great lakes --we also can be on I-90 or I-94 in minutes and in MT SD ND mn Ia etc in a few hours( i'll be in SD frp Prairie dogs in a week and MT for 2 1/2 mos this fall)- so it's livable--Looking back I might opt for MT or ID although they are also getting their share of wannabees and newbies who want to make them like HOME was.

I am fortunate enough to have been all over the world and the US.
I live in Milwaukee WI.

It is awesome for all the things you mention and more.
Training and all venues of tests and trial are abundant.
AKC HT's & FT's, HRC tests are plentiful, and NAHRA is coming to the area.
Many top quality clubs and trainers.

Fishing on lake Michigan is terrific.
Walleye & Musky as well as Ice fishing :)rolleyes:).
Whitetail hunting just minutes away.
Duck & Goose hunting is excellent.
Shooting preserves (as pheasants are down) and conservation clubs.
AKC HT's & FT's, HRC, and NAHRA is coming to the area.

Night life and culture is adequate.
Chicago is 75 miles away if you want big city stuff.

Winter is a little crappy, but summers are mild and falls are beautiful.

Cost of living is affordable.
People are terrific.

Pretty nice place tolive.

I would agree with John

When we were about to retire we look at CO , TX & MN & then decided to stay in MO. because you could train more days with good temperatures than any place we looked at. Also you can run 8 trials in the spring & 8 in the fall & never travel more than four & a half hours ( KC MO area) & more pro dog trainers & AM groups than most area we looked at.

The MO. Dept. of Conservation is rated as one of the best in the USA because they have the money to do what they needs to do to make good hunting & fishing available across the state it has been said, MO is the richest Dept. of Con in the USA because of twenty years ago we pass a sales tax on all hunting equip. sporting goods & it has worked out well

Difficult question. Montana is awesome. So many different hunting oppurtunities. Elk, Mule and Whitetail, Antelope, Moose, Bear, Upland, Waterfowl and the fishing is spectacular. I think I'd have to stick with Montana.

SeniorCoot, you hit the nail on the head. I go to the country to be in the country, not to import the garbage with me that I'm trying to get away from.
I escape to Ronan, Montana because I love it the way it is. I don't want it yupified. I cringe when I hear newcomers complaining that it doesn't have this or that. Grrrrrrr
