So, I was at the test on Sunday as an observer. I had a question about how the dogs were judged and carried.

1) Dog A is slightly vocal after it was initially sent...was quiet from what I could tell, until he was sent for the short breaking bird. No vocalization on the memory bird. Got 9's and 10's on both marks and one whistled the blind. Crept during the honor, but did not break, and did not interfere with the working dog. Creep was about 2-3 yds max, but did not go past the working dog.

2) Dog B comes to the line, cowers when the handler tells it to sit. Picks up the go bird, had a little bit of trouble on the memory bird...not sure how they scored the memory...then the dog no go'd the blind...twice. Went out the third time about 30 yds and was starting to pop, then the handler whistle sat the dog. Ran the whole thing with its tail low and cowering....

Do you carry both dogs...drop both dogs.....carry one and not the other? I will let you know how the judges handled this situation after we get some responses...

#1 dinged a bit on trainability/control from the creep. Noise duly noted. Carry the dog.

#2 is history. There is NO allowance for confusion on the send for a blind retrieve per the regs/guidelines. Sounds like some style issues as well, but the no go is the killer here.

I know both judges, run under them for years, can't believe it would be any other way than already suggested IF the scenarios are exactly as described, dog A carries, dog B fails for the no-gos. While I had to scratch my MH dog for injury and wasn't there, 2 dogs from my training group ran this very SH test, can't wait for the OP's "the rest of the story".

Hey Kim,

Master B missed ya!!

I was thoroughly stoked for it, dog's been running better than ever expected this spring, so of course she had to injure her stifle Tuesday at training, vet said I could take 2-4 weeks and let it heal or run her and do a CCL repair later, not much of a choice. Shot 100 rounds of clays and painted the garage instead, talk about a bummer. Hope it was a good test for everyone else though!

Labs, you gonna finish your answer to this thread, what happened with both dogs?

How would an observer in the gallery know a dog received 9’s and 10’s on the marks?
Did the handler ask the judges and the observer asks the handler?
Did the observer call out from the gallery “Hey, you in the chair! What did that dog score?
Or was this in the observers own book?

That was my next question if and when the OP continues, what is his/her experience with running HT and how does he/she know the scores of the marks, etc. Not being nasty, just want to know the "whole" story.

Since the answer seems obvious it would be nice to hear what the concern is.

Not a big fan of I will tell you later regards

Let's not get all wound up folks...the handler asked the judges what he s on the marks...handler A then told me. I would have concurred being a judge myself...

Now, how do your answers change if dog A is handled by a local pro and dog B by an am...or vice versa...should it matter...I don't think so...the dog work should be judged, not based on who the handler is...
