It seems like lately almost everyday I see a new RTFer from Alaska!

How many Alaskans do we have on RTF?

How many retriever folk are there in Alaska?

quite a few..for the size of our state!

I would guess that the NAHRA (MSGDA) club has 50 members give or take...there were about 35 dogs entered in our last test..of course some of those had the same handler...

I am sure someone from AWRC, RCA, FRC, or IAGDA could give you approximate membership of those clubs (of course many people have memberships to more than one club)

I don't know how many RTF's from Alaska there are, but if you count the number of households that own a retriever, that would be almost all of them (averaging for those who own many of them). I own three labs... so far...

Not enough, I could use one in this town!

I dont know how many but there were three Alaskan dogs qualified for this yrs 08 national Amateur...2 with Howard Niemi, 1 with Roy McFall

Roy Redifer of Alaska also Qualified for and competed in this years National AM.

I'm not in AK any more, but would say the retriever group up their is relatively small, with many belonging to multiple clubs. I think it would be safe to assume that the number of people actively training their retrievers for HT/FT is WELL below 1000, and more like 250. Just a guess though.

The Alaska Working Retriever Club has about 100 members as I believe the Retriever Club of Alaska has, most of us the same people.

There's a lot of us for the size of the population of the place.

Rod, if you didn't live so far away from the population centers of the state there'd be someone else in your town. Heck, you're about as far away from the mainstream as poor Jennifer Teed in Yellowknife.

Look at Mary Bixby. AFAIK she's the only competitive retriever person on the Kenai Peninsula.

And Frenchy, thanks for mentioning Roy R. I wonder if we have 250 people training for HT FT's. Not in any one year all at the same time.

I feel so isolated *cries.

But I was born and raised in Whitehorse, YT, so I am familiar with the Alaska neck of the woods. Used to go there all the time for sport tournaments and weekend trips. Heck I even went there for my honeymoon :p

Hang in there Jennifer, maybe I'll hit the road with my camper sometime and throw you a few marks!

Considering that our first trail we only had 84 entries total with 40 handlers, I would say that not even close to 250 people training... Haven't had a hunt test, but can say that alot of the trialers run master, so it's the same people... And then out of all of them, only a handful actually work at events....

I just heard that Frank Kashavarof and his wife sold their place in WA and moved to Alaska last week... and I also heard Frank's got a Chopper pup now.

I think thats called the 80-20 rule where the same 20% volunteer to do the work of any organization, it seems to be universal and certainly is with every retriever club I have ever seen. Year after year you see the same person working as head marshall, club secretary, whatever. I thank all of you who do volunteer, without you guys there would be no FTs or hunt tests.

I talked to Frank a few weeks ago.

He said the place in WA was too big. They wanted a smaller place. Plus, wanted to spend more time in AK. They've owned a place there for quite some time.

My impression was, he will still be back and forth like he has in the past.

I lived in Fai 74-98 and we had about 35 folks in our club I'd guess- i had only one lab there BLF but 35 sled dogs which were far more useful and had a much longer season of use in my area where dux season was short and not always sweet.
