At a recent test, a friend was chastised for "training" on the test grounds; he was throwing some bumpers for his dog. No collar, no corrections. I know the club is supposed to designate an area for handlers to "exercise" their dogs, but wonder exactly what is allowed and what is not allowed. On a hot day, can you throw a bumper in the water to cool your dog down? Can you throw a few bumpers for you dog in the "exercise area"? I've never seen an actual area for "exercising" my dogs at my local clubs' tests; I generally let them go off leash well away from the tests. Is this wrong?

I do not like it. It states that no training tools may be used on the grouds. The bumper is the core training tool in my eyes. However I've even seen a judge that was running at test throwing bumpers for her dog right before she went into the holding blind at a senior hunt test. I don't believe it's right.

Throwing a bumper for your dog to expel some pent up energy is not training...if you have to train concepts to your dog with a bumper on test day, you and your dog are not ready for that particular test, and I am not worried about you at that point anyway, because chances are, you are not going to pass...JMO....heeling sticks and e-collars is what I would have a problem with...

If it were a couple of fun bumpers. No steadying. No doubles/triples. Whats the problem?

I went to a judging seminar put on by Bill Speck long ago before he was the muckety muck in performance events. He said then, that it wasn't considered training if you were throwing it yourself. I took that to mean that stand alones were alright as was throwing a bird instead of a bumper or even throwing more than one bird like a hand thrown double or triple.

Where has common sense gone to?

Last seminar I went to, the AKC rep indicated that a handler throwing happy bumpers was not training on the grounds.
Jerry Mann said the same thing at the last one I went to, as well. A couple fun bumpers is a much better way to induce a "poop" in mine before we go to the line than a match! :)

You are going to have a hard time finding a venue without a whole gallery of people and participants with training tools.

Leeds
choke chains
White shirts
gloves
hats
whistles

No training on grounds I believe is the intent.

Yup.

Rep said unequivocally at the seminar I attended that a few happy bumpers to warm a dog up--or whatever--was NOT training.

When accused of "training" one of his high powered dogs by throwing a few happy bumpers, one pro trainer replies:rolleyes::
"yes maam - I am training him to break just before the test"

I just attended a seminar within the last few weeks. Jerry Mann,Field Director Sporting Group of AKC said ,as I wrote down in my notes, "happy bumpers are NOT training on the grounds". That in my book says that happy bumpers are not training.

That's why I said use not just have.

who would be the one to make the call...the FT Chairperson ? or if you thought that unfair training was taking place where would you take that complaint ?

I would tell them to pound sand. Nobody in today's FT or HT has the guts to actually write some one up for rule infractions let alone moronic ones like this one. Even if they did, I doubt you can find a committee that would take action against you, but even if they did, AKC has shown they won't back it up. So pretty much do what you want.

Same here.

Seems she developed this habit while potty training in the rain one cold spring morning (at that time I said "whatever works).

That is not true.
If our FT committee finds that serious rules have been broken, it will be written up. And, AKC will back up any such action they rule legitimate.

For the rest, I agree, throwing a fun bumper is not training.
