I don't think many folks realize how much Purina contributes to our sport, and I would like to publicly thank them for doing so with little fanfare. Every National finalist receives six forty pound bags of Performance Pro Plan and eight large bags of biscuits delivered to the door. Thanks Dean Reinke and the team at Pro Plan!!!!

This year the Pro Plan rep showed up at our FT and provided coupons for all the placements for a bag of food. It was a nice touch! I also know they provided bags of food and dog treats to another local club only a few weeks after our trial....good stuff!

I use their food and am glad for their efforts in Field Trials and other hunt test organizations. However, I don't think thanks is in order. I mean they are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They are strategicly targeting the competition dog with their Pro Plan which to be honest is fairly high priced. I do not believe that they care about the sport, they just want to make money.

I guess I disagree. I do understand your point, but just because the teenager at McDonalds is paid to to your order doesn't mean you can't say thank you when they bag it up and hand it to you? I know I appreciated the coupons they gave us, not to mention hats which I gave to the club members who worked their rears off....yeah Purina is out to make money, but I am thankful they do support our events and as long as they do I'll continue to say thank you and buy their products.

It is the same reason I buy from Dog-Afield, they offer the clubs a good discount on items needed to run a trial, I appreciate that! Yes they are out to make money but it doesn't mean I do not appreicate what they do for the sport, so when I have a choice to buy training gear, I tend to buy it from them.

Oh well, to each there own....

You have a point but what other dog foods are stepping up and making the same contribution. is Pro Plan highly priced ...absolutely..but some of us get the best results from using it..any good company has to give back to their consumer, it makes good business sense..

I wont bite the hand that feeds regards

I like ProPlan foods and feed them to all of my dogs and pups. When I recommend ProPlan foods to puppy buyers I tell them I do it because the foods are good AND because ProPlan does more than any other manufacturer to support retriever events. We need all the friends we can get and I believe in favoring our friends. Even if it is business, it is good business for us all. However, I personally do retriever events because I love the dogs and I think Purina, somewhere in its corporate psyche, does also. As a group, compared with the general consumer, we do not throw them a lot of business. But they throw us a lot of support,

BTW, I also buy from Dogs Afield and do my entries through EE for the same reason.

I fully realize it, and also understand fully that is the one reason it costs $42/bag;-) but, I patronize them because they sponsor our sport so emphatically.

Noticed the Pro Plan Puppy Large Breed is now in a 34 pound bag and the price went up. Is the PPP also going to a 34 pound bag with a price increase? I hope not.......
Just bought a bag yesterday at Petco....37.5 lbs for $42

I am loyal to Purina all the way back to the days of Purina dog chow an dog meal..heck I even used their pigeon scratch to feed birds way back when....now if Black Gold Dog food wants to drop a couple of pallets off at the house I could be persuaded to change :p:p

Didn't mean to sound Like an A**. I just feel that they have been taking advantage of their good will lately. The price per pound has gone up 20% or so in the last 3 years. The cut out the buy 10 get one free...ect...Sure they give out free bags but they get ten times that back. Also Purina as a company doesn't have a great track record on alot of issues.

Now this is not about the dealer. There are alot of great guys in the company that really do care about our sport and our dogs.

In all fairness, check out food commoditites. They have doubled and tripled over the past several years, totally separate from the fuel price spike that has since come down. I don't pretend to know the business, but I'll bet their increased price goes more to cover increased raw materials than profit.

I use their products, as I was impressed with their R&D facilities, and the contributions they've made to veterinary nutrition science. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and keep using them, as long as my dogs look good and run good and live long.

In 1965 I first started feeding Purina, one dog,and until 2001 I continued to feed 2-3 bags per month to 5-7 dogs. When the difference in price was $13 per bag and I had analyzed the nutritional values between Black Gold (50#) and PPP( 37 1/2 #) I changed to Black Gold. Purina is a first class food and if a person's dogs are doing well on it , by all means stay on it. Money is important, but your dog's health is more important. The field reps for Purina are First Class- Bob West, Keith Schopp, Pat LaMancha, Roy Pelton, Dean Reinke all fun and good guys-a great group, a good dog food, acompany that has excellent marketing stratiges-tell them thank you and walk away.

I stand corrected. Today I went to PetCo bought a bag of PPPLBP for $42.99 and it was only 34 lbs.

That amounts to a 12% increase in price per lb.
