Heard on the news last night that lots of hunters went home empty handed. Due to the weather farmers can't get in and harvest crops so they are hard to find. Good luck to all!

Ed,

I'm envious! I wish I were 40 hours from chasing roosters.

I didn't start hunting until I was 21 but, pheasants were my first quarry. It's amazing how your attitude change when your purpose changes. Walking fileds cutting noxious weeds from seed fields was tedious. Walking the same fields with a gun, retriever and maybe another hunter never got old.

It took me a couple of seasons before I learned you couldn't shoot them in the tail feathers and expect them to drop!

I've never hunted SD. I'm stuck chasing a few wild rooster locally here in OH. Fortunately, I live in a county with a small but viable population of wild pheasants. I'm just happy to be able to put my dog on some wild birds.

I'll be thinking about you saturday morning for our waterfowl opening day. We don't have too many more ducks than pheasants. But, there should be plenty of geese!

Have fun!

Tom

Went out for a couple hours on Monday for the resident opener...should have had my limit, but my shooting was lacking. Ended up with one nice rooster though. Almost all the crops are still in around my area and probably not comming out for a while. Definatly looking forward to my first year living in SD though! Good luck on your trip! Here is a pic of my 16 month old chessie's first Pheasant.

Ed, I was going to wish you luck, but I know luck really isn't part of your awesome hunts out there. Sa have a great and safe trip!! I plan to be hunting both N and S Dakota's over Thanksgiving!!! Can't wait!!!

Field Trial....what field trial......;)

it's the real deal now

On the road North in about 40 hours, yipee it's Christmas for me....:D

No birds in South Dakota this year. Everyone may as well stay home and train.

Can you believe I'm thinking about heading out the second weekend of the season to run a field trial? I was talking about pulling both my dogs and taking them hunting. Their trainer says, "yup, you should just go ahead and do that."

not able to make my trip to Federick Sd this year. Im jealous of those who are lucky enough to be there for the opener. Happy Hunting.

Hoping to be out in SoDak on Tuesday. My main dog got invited to the Master National and Tim Springer offered to handle him so he is down in Tex now. Have to make do with my untested 2 year old and my untrained Golden Beagledor.

It's OK Buzz, we'll try to keep the pheasant population under control

You'll get better in time.......;-)

I'm jealous also Ed.

My buddies and I generally make 4 to 6 long weekend trips a year to South Dakota, but where we hunt it does not get real good till the crops are harvested and they are very late this year. It's looking like our 1st trip will be the middle of November.

I'll be taking one old dog also. Liz is 12 1/2 and was a great one in her day.

We are very lucky in that it's only a 6 1/2 hour drive for us to get to heaven.

Good luck and be safe. .....Don

I'm jealous of that, we used to hunt Kansas opening weekend too but got weary of hunting all day for not that many birds so we added another SD hunt to take it's place

We've left ahead of a blizzard twice in the past 2 years, once in November and once in December

I've tried to get Uncle Bill to adopt me so I can participate in residents only opening weekend....

Leaving Tuesday for 4 days in Stickney SD - not the big country of 100 bird flushes but limits everyday for four people in 3 hours trog
I have some buddies who we used to hunt Kansas with who hunt near Stickney, they are all good to excellent shots and generally finish 2 or 3 hours before our group. We have walkers who can't shoot and shooters who can't walk and a few intermediates who can do both...;-)

Have a great trip, FC-AFC Trumarc's Lean Quisine loves her new assignment

Don't listen to the Gooser, Ed. He only talks a good game. He's been invited to my place several times, but weasels out every year, so I suspect his shooting is so poor he doesn't want to be embarrassed. (But what an oxymoron eh? Can anyone imagine the Gooser being embarrassed?)

I'm sure you have good grounds to hunt, with CRP or non-crop fields. It will be well into turkey-time before many of the corn fields are harvested. Some of the farmers are having trouble getting in to even cut the silage, and the beans in our area are in various stages of harvest, not that they hold any birds to speak of.

Most birds are in the flowers and corn, so those planning to make the trip later, should have better luck in the fields.

Mox Nix for me. Most of the birds in my bag come from road hunting. I'm just waitng for the sun to shine so they'll be where I usually find them...back on the roads...grinning.

Good luck. Watch out for the badger holes and skunks.;-)

ah yes, the time honored and perfected tradition of South Dakota road hunting.........

the brothers and I used to make the annual trip to Nebraska for pheasant hunting, but as the years have passed so did many of our hunting pals. We then tried the couples/spouses trip and that was a disaster. So now the rule is guys only and the highlight of the trip is to go to THE Cabelas, lately its been are we going to Cabelas so we can hunt pheasants or are we hunting pheasants so we can go to Cabelas
