Was wondering who has the best prices on Rivers West Gear. Thinking about buying The outlaw bibs and jacket and possibly the waterfowl pullover. I hear it's great stuff. Thoughts?...

Thanks, Danny

Unless they have improved the material, It leaks like a sieve. Anywhere there was a pressure point, elbows, knees, I was soaking wet. It had an amazing ability to wick water up the inner fleece up the sleeve. It was not very warm even when it was dry. I would never buy any more of this stuff. I have a jacket and bibs I have put back in the spare gear box. I might use it again in mild weather, but would not count on it keeping me dry! Do a google search, I found a bunch of people unhappy with it!

I have a four-year-old RW Backcountry jacket, and my experience has been much different than Kyle's, as it's been significantly more waterproof than my "waterproof and breathable" membrane garments from Columbia (OmniTec), Cabelas (old GorTex), Drake and Hodgman. Just no more breathable and, even with the vents unzipped, it can get steamy on a long walk in.

When I expect to be out long in any serious rain, I wear a cheap pvc or urethane(?) Hodgman parka over the Drake EST pullover if it's just coolish or Rivers West jacket when it's really cold. I find the RW comfortable as an old sweat shirt but a heck of a lot warmer. Flat love it when it's cold enough out not to sweat in it.

I would tend to agree with Rick based on my own experience. I've had great results with the waterproof aspects of their products, but they don't breath at all.

Great for cold wet days in the blind, but its the pits for walking through the upland fields. Even with my lightweight jacket, I sweat bullets with it on.

I have one RW coat. It is very waterproof, and warm. It has kept me dry in total white out rainstorms. It seldom is cold enough for me to wear it. However, it has that damn fuzzy outside material that holds water and gets VERY heavy, although it does not leak through the coat.

If I were you, I would also stray away from Rivers west. Yes, if you are standing still in a field and getting rained on without moving, this gear would be great...but, if you have to move, the water soaks through. Also, if its just an average day in the south where you need a jacket, after the walk to the blind, you are sweating so much that the undergarmets turn wet and make you colder..

Also, my dad and I both have RW jackets. BOTH of our zippers malfunctioned in the first season. It took me about a month to convince customer service to send me a couple new ones, and they only sent me one.

One more thing, I have a giant hole in my pants from standing next to the fire and a spark popped out on me. The rubber like material melts when exposed to extreme heat instead of just creating a small burn hole.

Hope this helps....My siblings used Drake gear last year and liked it...

I guess I'll have to rethink the Rivers West gear as getting to my waterfowl areas usually requires a decent walk or paddle in. Time to do some more homework.

Thanks, Danny
I doubt there's anything that keeps you dry in real rain that won't sweat you up on a long walk or paddle. Thought it was chilly enough to wear my Drake EST (their lightest) pullover as a windbreaker while hiking with the dogs yesterday and soaked the t-shirt under it with sweat. (Would have been way better off with a regular windbreaker.) And the Drake leaked badly until I Nikwaxed it and still leaks through the "call pockets" on its chest.

I will admit that my Rivers West gear is the first or second year editions, I'm guessing they have changed the material. But my brother and I both have the jackets and I have the bibbs also. But I am so disappointed in the product, I'd be afraid to pay that much again and have them fail. It will keep you dry for a while. But the inner liner will wick and hold water. So If you have to use your duck call your arm is going to be soaked to the elbow. I would get the neoprene around the wrist for sure. I'm going to look for a dry-plus type of rain jacket, I don't really care if it is breathable. I'm also looking at the Helly Hanson Inpertech line. But good luck in whatever you get.
