I just went through this a few weeks ago. If you look in the Product Review section, you will see my thread which will give you quite a few good ideas.

With that being said. I just ordered 1 four shooter with standard sound Bumper Boy. I will most likely order more later, but here is my reasoning of why I chose Bumper Boy over Thunder Launchers.

1. Price. You can order a 4 shooter for $1036, which includes the transmitter and receiver. You can then order additional ones for approximately $900, which includes the receiver to work with transmitter you got with the first one.

I personally like the Thunder500 Launcher and wanted so bad to go with that model, based solely on how compact it was. The one thing that stopped me from doing it was the cost. It is $1000 for one, and does not include transmitter, which is another $300. So, it is $1300 (approx) for the first one. Then, if you want to order a second one, it is still $1,000, plus another $175 for the additional receiver.

Comparison in Price. Two 4 launchers of Bumper Boy is under $2,000. Two 5 launcher Thunder500 is just under $2,500.

I do see that Bumper Boy now offers a receiver that is compatible with all launchers that use Tri-Tronics or Dogtra remotes, so I may venture to buy a Thunder500 in the future and get the bumper boy compatible receiver, but anyway you look at it, it is still $300 more expensive for each consecutive unit of Thunder500 than Bumper Boy.

This analysis in now way indicates that either product is good or bad. As I said. I really like the compactness of Thunder500 and also that it is enclosed and will launch in all conditions, but Bumper Boy loads have problem when working in wet conditions, so that may be something else you need to consider.

Good luck. I can not wait to get my Bumper Boy order and try it out, hopefully during the Thanksgiving weekend.

the first and main question - how many dogs are you going to be training??? next - what do you want to build to?

over and over here you will hear long-timers here in RTF tell you not to repeat marks. the Thunder 500 looks like 5 shots to the same location. think about it. training 1 or 2 dogs, its a waste. if training 3 or more - or planning to - and you plan on buying another thunder 500 or 2, different story.

training 1 or 2 dogs - its hands down the bumper boy. i took the advice of several here and got the BB derby double with advanced sound 2 months ago. great advice, i love it. training 1 dog now, hopefully 2 next year, so i am set, i just need a second and third to do more double marks but thats not the point - you have to move it anyway to avoid a repeat mark. so a 5-shooter is a waste for me. and anyone else i suspect if training just 1 or 2 dogs.

plus - the BB bumpers mix and match with retriev-r-trainers and hand dummy launchers. same .22 blanks. thunder 500 is dedicated gas cylinder system.

if i were training 4 or 5 dogs i would certainly consider the thunder 500 - actually 2 of them. but with just 1 or 2 its the BB. plus the thunder 500 is 19 lbs??? BB about 3 or so.....

as my KRD set ups show, i set it up bi-directional, shoot a mark, run 2-3 blinds, shoot the other and run 2-3 more cold blinds. now we either go home or he rests while i set up another.

I,ll Be Running 4-6 Dogs But I Don,t Mind If I Have To Walk Out After I Run 2 Dogs And Have To Load It Up Again I,m Thinking Of Buying 2 Of Them. I Was Thinking Of Getting A Bango And A Derby Double.

With 4-6 dogs I'd go with the Thunder. I love mine(3). No maintainance, 30 second set up, and small size to carry around. And Doug has one of the best sevice companies out there.
