Im gonna preface all of this with telling you this is my first dog that Im attempting to train myself. I now see why everyone told me to let a pro FF her, but Ive done all of her training up to now and dont want to give up out of frustration. Nelli is 13 months old, is solid on sit, here, and heel. She hunted with me this year and retrieved 80+ ducks and got her first started pass last weekend at CRC's HT. Because of the timing of her teeth coming in right before hunting season Im just now getting around to FF. I started the day after the season went out here in SC which was 2/1.

It took 2 weeks to get to where I felt comfortable with hold, and I may be obsessing too much over this whole thing but just need some advice on were I am and if this is normal. She will hold the bumper continously for 2 minutes, will walk at heel while holding the bumper, will sit while holding while I walk off out to distances of 100 yards. Everything Ive read and watched told me we are at the right stage to start "fetch" with ear pinch. We started ear pinch on monday, 2/15. Been doing 2 sessions a day, morning and evening, the few 6 sessions everything seemed fine so I started throwing her a couple marks on Thursday morning at the end of the session. She did great, delivered them to hand, and I felt like we were starting to make some real progress. Then yesterday evening she starts actin a fool, we are on the ground, and Im holding the bumper farther and farther away and shes lunging for it every time. We end the session on a good note and I throw her a fun bumper, she goes and gets it and drops it at my feet, I pick it up, do ear pinch, tell her to fetch and she does, lots of praise so i try it again, same result. EP'd again she grabs it, holds it, I give lots of praise and put her up, to end the session on a good note. This mornings session went pretty much the same way with 2 drops at my feet at the end and I'm frustrated to say the least.

I now realize that after all this typing I probably just need to slow back down, take away the fun bumpers and chill out, but any advice/encouragement would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading my vent.

Signed,

a frustrated newb

Evan, Ive read "10 Minute Retriever", watched Akin's "Duck Dog Basics" and watched the Farmer/Aycock "Basics" DVD. I've gleaned ideas and methods from all three but If I had to say Im "following" a particuar program then DDB is probably the one Im referring back to the most.

Started in the back of a UTV, moved to the ground and our EP sessions have all been basically what I saw in your link, minus the bucket. Im on one knee in order to be a little more mobile if need be and have started standing beside her the past couple of sessions and moving the bumper farther away.

IMO this is exactly what you need to do. Here's your encouragement: you are right on in your judgment! Good job!

Who knows why she dropped them? "What to do with dummies" is an ever-changing picture in her mind right now. Trying to attend to this issue is a potential distraction to a force-fetch process that sounds as though it is going well. If you stop throwing fun bumpers for now, she will not be practicing the wrong behavior (dropping), and you will not distract from your good progress by trying to deal with it.

Another way to end the session on a happy note is to finish up with some easier fetches, perhaps reaching forward instead of down. In other training, it won't hurt to work on coming in and sitting at heel while holding the bumper--you don't mention whether you've done that.

Will the dog fetch off the ground without an earpinch if you tell her? If she does you're done with force!!! If she doesn't get her to pick up a bumper or bird off the the ground when you say fetch. Once she picks up off the ground you're done. When it comes to fun bumpers keep moving backwards telling her to hold and take the bumper from her when she gets close praising her for it. She'll soon get the idea you want her to bring it to you. Once she picks a bumper off the ground start walking fetch on a ten foot lead. keep moving after she picks up the bumper and take it out of her mouth on the move. It can be difficult to transfer hold from the force session to the retrieve. Be patient and make that part fun!!

Amy, I should have mentioned that about coming in to heel while holding. Thats part of whats so frustrating. When I sit her while she's holding and walk off 100 yards, when I blow the "come in" whistle she will run straight to me, spin around at heel and hold the bumper until I take it, yet she drops it every time I throw a mark for her. lol.

438, she will not fetch off the ground yet, I can hold the bumper right off the ground and she'll fetch it but we havent made the transition to fetching from the ground yet.

About to go out and do another session. I'll keep y'all posted, thanks for the replys so far

I (you might too, even though it wasn't stated) think that it's important to also do force to pile work.

I know this doesn't address CMR's issue, but I did want to interject the FTP point.

To sorta address CMRs issue, perhaps a simple (non-fun bumper) mark would be a better way to end the session and give the dog the HOLD command as it returns????? And don't be so quick to take the bumpers as the dog returns...let it/make it HOLD them for a few seconds. Yes? No? Just my $.02 worth.
