Just a thread to get everyones opinion. Some say they should look short, stocky and powerfull, Some say they should be tall, thin and agile. Please include your research that backs up your ideas. And for the record, I think a Lab is a Lab is a Lab.

I agree Sean, but I have noticed there are some pretty strong beliefs on this subjct here. I dont think there is any wrong or right answer. Just interesting opinions.

What a Lab should look like is defined my the parent club, the Labrador Retriever Club.

http://www.thelabradorclub.com/subpages/show_contents.php?page=Breed+Standard

The reason there is such a wide variety of Lab looks here in the USA is because of the breeds popularity and lack of knowledge by owners of what a Lab should look like. Add to the fact that the two most popular Lab Specialties (Bench & Field) ignore the The Standard.

If the look and temperment of the breed were not defined, then there would be no way of maintaining the integrity of the breed because there would be no consistency or ideal!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I like the ones in the link to Kevin's post, and am partial to my Joe Black pup.

I love my dogs, but would hardly consider them best from a conformation perspective. I would be very happy to have dogs that looked like almost any of the LR bench champions from 1960 and earlier. However, somewhere since then the breed seems to have lost its way, losing contact with its sporting roots as deep chest, strong, and broad countenance became code for fat.

I prefer dogs like this one. They will not be found at Westminster but often seen at the last series of a Field Trial.

The powder keg has been lit. I wonder who will get suspended over this now weekly topic that ends in the moderator checking someone into the box.

Wait ..... let me get my popcorn!

If they live in my house they are all cute, whether they come from field lines or show lines!

I love my chocolate and think she is beautiful. She is very field looking and if I could pick any look I liked (and still get performance) I think I would make her a little wider in the head. Here is a pic of my pretty girl!
