Hi all,

First post here... What a great board! I wanted to get feedback on an issue I'm having.

I have had a Pro 500 G2 for 5+ years now. Maybe even quite a bit longer, I honestly don't remember. Great collar, no complaints on operation.

HOWEVER, recently the plastic pieces on the sides (where the collar strap slips through and is held to the receiver) have broken! In the span of one month BOTH plastic pieces on BOTH collar receivers have become non-functional. This essentially renders both receivers useless because they shift around on the neck and cause rubs, not being held on properly from the sides. I've even tried zip-ties to hold the unit to the collar strap properly - no luck. :-/

I haven't had to deal with TT customer service before. I hear they are pretty good. BUT this collar is technically I guess out of any warranty, being 5+ years old. At the same time, it's a very very lightly used collar - barely even taken out of the case over the years. It would be a shame to have to trash it.

Do you think TT will send me new receivers? How are they with situations like this? Should I not get my hopes up?

Thanks!

Jenn

Oh, thanks for reminding me! I have Tracer lights... I haven't even used them. That should work in a pinch.

Jee I still hope TT helps me out... I've only used the collar a total of maybe 5 hours at all in it's entire life. I boxed it for a move and "lost" it until now. I know that's not TT's problem, but for a collar to break with almost no use... All I can say is, if they DO help me, they'll have a loyal customer for life. ;-)

In the time you wrote about your problem you could have called TT and found out. I've never had a problem in or out of warrenty. They know that customer service is what butters their bread. I have 3 or 4 of those receivers myself that have loops proken off, need to send them back in. What are Tracer light you are refering too? What do they do and how do they work. Bud

I sent them an e-mail inquiry. I just wanted a general feel for whether I should get my hopes up, or buy Dogtra in the future. LOL

Not to mention, if EVERYONE has had results indicating they should happily replace said receivers, but I get a "no", then I'd know to keep contacting them until I spoke to the guy who's been saying "yes" to others in a similar situation.

Jenn, they replaced my "out of warranty" receiver because the loops breaking was a common failure. They were great.

I have the same problem with one of my collars. TT told me it would be 65 dollars to repair. I was floored. I have two collars and this was only the second time I had used this one. Very disappointed

This has happened with all my G2 collars... they did replace one set for me on a 2-dog unit.

Anyone have any idea what is causing the collar to break?

I have one collar that is 4 years that has never broken. I bought a new one that did break within the first year. TT replaced it when I sent it in for warranty for a different problem.

I know that with the new collar, I had used it to attach the dog on a tie out stake. I had never done this with the older collar and no longer do it at all.

Has anyone else with the breaking issue used the collar to attach dog to tie out?

The TT Tracer Lights sandwhich between the battery and electrodes. They can either be set to flash or continuous on from the transmitter. Set transmitter dial on "A" and press low or med button.

I have a red and blue and the blue is much more visable IMO. Clear is also available, but I have not seen this in action.

I've found the lights do not negatively affect the collar function.

Thanks for the responses, everyone! There seems to be a bit of a mix of response from TT... I hope I get one of the "yes men" LOL

I did not know the loops breaking was a common failure. It's unfortunate, but I am glad to know it wasn't anything I did wrong myself. I've never used the collar to tie (I don't even put a leash on it) so I had no idea what was causing the collars to break all of a sudden.

its a bad design flaw, and TT should certainly fix both the flaw and replace the bad ones. Bud

Same deal with me. Mine are out of warranty. I thought they said 60 bucks to replace and asked the serial #'s. I didn't have them and haven't got back with them. I asked if it was recalled or anything since it is a comman problem and was told no.

Bud, that was the point I brought up when they agreed to replace it for free. It probably does not hurt if you mention you discovered how common the failure was by reading on RTF!

Jenn,
Both sides of both G2 receivers broke this year after many years of service. If you want a quick fix just use good old fashioned duct tape. Cut strips and affix to the sides where the plastic broke. Just don't cover the charging contacts or indicator light. The tape holds the collar just fine. I use mine daily on several dogs. Good as new.

I have collars that have broken a collar strap bracket. I use electrical tape and make about 4 wraps around the collar. I cut the tape off the LED window with a utility knife so I can see if it's on or off. I've got two collars that are over 2 years like this. I thought I'd have to replace the electrical tape every few months, but I haven't had to do it yet.

Last November I bought another collar and I taped it with electrical tape as soon as I fitted it to a dog. An ounce of prevention.

Hi folks.

It's good to know they have fixed the design flaw. I might even opt for a G3 later this year in light of that.

I think mine was one of the "flawed loop" ones because despite it's age I haven't had more than a month's worth of use out of it. Good to know.

Thanks also for the tape suggestion. If it really was an OLD collar I would probably just tape it and forget it. And I like tape as a preventative! :)

My training partner's receiver had done that. I don't remember TT'S response. However, on every issue I have had with my tritronics equipment they have been great,( read "fair"). I deal with product issues every day and am sick of customers not being realistic in their expectations. Out of warranty, the responsibilty becomes that of the owner. That isn't to say that an obvious design flaw should not be "fairly" addressed by the manufacturer. Just understand that, IMO, each case should be treated individually on it's merits. Also, any thing they do on out of warranty units is beyond their obligations and should be appreciated as a bonus, not expected.
