My pup is 14.5 weeks old now and at about 9-10 weeks she was extremely independent. We've been working through the Bill Hillmann's dvd and she's doing really well. I also started using treats to get her to come to her name and have her sit in front of me to get it. Took about 2 treats to get her to come when otherwise she would just ignore me. We also started going on off leash walks on wooded trails and that made a world of difference when she wasn't comfortable and I was the leader. I had another lab with me though, so that helped in keeping her with the "pack." I was getting extremely frustrated, but I think it was just a stage. She's very responsive now. Good luck!

I agree with not pushing pups to early but early obedience structure of walking on a leash, Sit, Stand for grooming, Stay, Down, and Come can be taught at this age. NO corretions just make it positive and fun. Nothing wrong with using a light line with your pup and use his NAME and not pup, pup, pup. Use COME or HERE and a small tasty food treat.
..Zactly,..I agree as well,..too much structure, can indeed zap some drive out and you can't put it back very easily, if ever. If a dog is "drive zapped",..ie,..ruined by learning a few simple commands, I'd say,..#1, trainer went about it wrong,..#2, get the dog spayed or neutured.

I'm not really in a rush to get titles on him or anything like that, he's going to be a hunting buddy more than anything. I'm just looking for methods others use since this my first puppy and I am new to all this.
He's actually been more responsive over the past few days. We've given him less "freedom" to roam wherever he wants whether it be inside or outside. Walks in the outdoors seem to be helping as well as making things really fun for him. I think he'll be just fine he's not as independent as others have described their pups to be.

When you go to a hunt test, do most of the dogs exhibit to much control? or to little?

What habits should the dog have had since it was a puppy?

I upland hunt my dogs, and have high expectations on that front, along with the same for duck hunting. Independence up front is not always a bad thing. In fact in my world it is what I am looking for. It's all about balance I guess.
