What type of Microchips do you use?

I was researching (again) before ordering microchips. What is your favorite and why? Have any of you had chips that migrate to other parts of the pup's body? If so, what brand was that?

Financially, they are all not to different so I would like to know what everyone prefers.

I use HomeAgain but first find out what brand of scanners your local shelters use. Avid still has the edge in some areas, although HomeAgain makes it easier to post current pictures and change your address and/or phone number. Migration hasn't been an issue for me but you can always ask for a scan if you're concerned. Anne

All six of my dogs have the AVID chips. I check them regularly and none have migrated so far. The oldest is 11 years old and is still in the same spot.

I had AVID on Jake but my vet goes with Home Again and I have those on 3 dogs now. Jake's AVID migrated but none of the others have to date.

I can't remember but doesn't one brand require a specific chip reader in order to get the chip data?

Mike, most of the chips comply with a standard; however, one of AVIDs chips requires an AVID only reader. Some of their chips can be read by other readers but those companies producing the other readers had to pay AVID for the code to read the AVID chips. (This was from a representative of the Homeagain chip)

I was there was a standard where all readers read all chips!

I use homeagain from revival animal online. They give you a 5 dollar price breal when you buy 5 or more, they are a standard freq to be redable by most good scanners. Revival also has great customer service. Just my .02

My vet recommended Avid Chip and he doesn't even do chip implants at his office.

I use AVID chips for my own dogs and for the last 60 pups I have sold. I know of only one instance of a chip that migrated -- it is in one of my dogs and migrated toward her right shoulder. I like the fact that AVID only has a single lifetime fee for chip registration with an additional $6/change fee for contact information updates. I believe that the annual fee policies of other chip manufacturers are outrageous and increase the likelihood that the chip will fail at putting owner and pup back together because someone will fail to renew.

I use HomeAgain and it came through a year ago with a dog that I had thought was lost. A South Carolina Humane Society scanned the dog and through HomeAgain they contacted me. I have never paid any additional fees for service, however, there is a extra service program available for a fee, but I have chosen not to participate.

I know the initial thread was asking which microchip but it seems to be drifting into which company do you pay to keep your data connected to your pup.

While researching chips, I came upon the Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR). It is a non-profit organization and pet recovery experts for 15 years.

If your pet has a microchip, the number of that microchip must be directly linked to you. This is done by enrolling it in a recovery service, like AKC CAR. So for those of you (like me) that have your dog chipped but not on a database, this might be a good one!

The only problem I had with the AKC CAR chips is that the vet's reader won't read them. I ordered the starter kit with the universal reader, so no problem there, but worried that should one get away that the area shelters won't be able to read them. I will prob order AVID next go round just to be covered. I have chipped three litters of pups and already had one reunited with owner due to them. Please remember/remind that the chips must be registered in the owner's name, especially if bought through Revival, etc. CAR called me since I bought the chip directly from them, but had I bought it through Revival, it would have traced to Revival then (hopefully) to me through Revival's records...this could add days to the separation of owner/dog due to weekends, etc.

I haven't had a pup in a while and my vet doesn't have chips. I have several in my various age dogs. When I did a CERF a couple of weeks ago, ISU vet hospital put in Home Again.

When I got home I read that I owed $25 for the initial set-up and then $15/year. Good grief. That seems extremely high to just put information in a database. If I don't pay the $15 next year do they actually remove the information from their database?

I do not believe so. If you read the fine print, it sounds like the annual fee is just for "enhanced" services and not linked to simply having your dog registered in the database. However, the whole thing strokes me as a scam trying to scare people into a ridiculously high annual payment for nothing. It is the sole reason I do not use their chips.

I have Home Again in my golden. My lab came chipped, I can not remember the 'brand'. My vet was "concerned" because he had not heard of it. He explained Home Again and AKC are the biggest databases, and compliment each other so if the dog is registered with one the other knows it. That being said, I registered Quinn's chip with the company and AKC. When I got the information for the registry from the company, it came from Home Again. So that made me happy.

My vet did try his scanner on Quinn and the chip was where it was supposed to be and he got a read of her number. So that was good too.

Have any of you heard of the Pro-ID Microchip?? When reading about it, it said:
"Pro-ID Microchip System is the American standard chip frequency of 125 kHZ. The chip can be read by all scanners EXCEPT the Avid-only scanner."

Have any of you ever used this time of microchip?
