I have labs that have pointed since 7 weeks old, i would never try to teach a dog to stand game, it is not a true point, If your dog points great if it doesnt and you want one that does get one!

Pointing is genetic and not a trained response.
If you train a dog to "point", it's not a real point -- it's called standing game.
"Training a Lab to point" is bogus BS.

I read an article by Jim Dobbs on how to teach your lab to point is this bad for a dog running hunt test? Just curious if anyone has ever done this before.
Don't know anything about pointing labs but I'd guess that there would be a chance that you may send your dog on to retrieve and he may point/stand instead of retrieve. I'm curious to see if anyone with experience will comment.

There are many, many titled labs that point. The titles are everything from FC and AFC to MH and others. A well trained retriever is a well trained retriever. I've never had any of my pointing labs point a retrieve. These are smart dogs.

My dog Ely is a natural pointer. He will only point live, non crippled birds. If he smells any blood he will go right in. At times I have to all but kick him in the rear to get him to flush a tight holding bird.

As far as hunt test go if you run UKC upland test the rules state " the dog MUST actively participate in the flush" also " the handler may not intimidate the dog in any way" so if you are yelling at your dog to flush a bird and he is locked up on point you may be in trouble.

The pointing has never shown up in a retrieving test for my dog.

Maggie's sire is a pointing lab, and she will point on occasion, should I whoa break her or should I leave it where it is?

The pro I've used has had a least a handful of dogs that have passed APLA tests and some are MH titled or at least have MH passes towards the title.

I've never seen the pointing come into play doing marks. The only thing I've heard of is some dogs, after doing a lot of pointing training getting ready for an APLA event, naturally get a little independant which makes their handling on blinds loosen up a bit. Just have to fine tune them again before running a hunt test to sharpen their blinds back up.

Along with Doc, Keskam, and a couple others, A lab that points naturally is a pointing lab, you can train one to stand game but why? and yes a PL does know a wounded bird to a live bird, they will not point a dead bird or wounded.
Yes I have a Pointing Lab and love watching him work My dog? 1.5XGMPR Lankas Labs Brandys Maximillion SH, going for MH and finished this year. The only difference between these dogs and your other labs is they point they do not flush. At home in the water retrieving ducks or in the upland field.

PLs do not point dead or wounded.

Ah but they will.
Often my dogs lock up on a crippled pheasant while upland hunting and Wallaces Quiver pointed a crippled flyer at a MH test- he still passed though.
Fetch em up works wonders.
