The very best advice i can give you, doesn't answer your question, but I think most here will agree with it.

If you're thinking about getting a puppy, training, hunting, breeding, etc....

Seek out a local retriever club, and go ask a LOT of questions. Many have training days, tests, trials, seminars etc. You will likely be overwhelmed with all the dog talk and tell yourself " I don't really need all that, I just want a hunting dog." Don't let it all intimidate you. You might be VERY surprised at how serious you can get in a very short period of time. Just keep going and asking questions. You can learn a great deal, from other peoples trial and error, on anything from pedigrees, to picking a pup, to training, etc. If you are not committed to the pup in March, you may even want to hold off just a little bit, before you make any decisions. Retrievers are HIGHLY rewarding animals, and hopefully this is your first step of a lifelong passion.

I apologize for the rudeness. The reality is, you are heads and tails ahead of many of us when we were brand new to retrievers, just by seeking out this site, and asking the question.

Forgive the cliche' but it's not a dumb question, if you don't know the awnser.

Visit this site often. Ask more "dumb" questions. Lots of them. There is a LOT of good, and a tad of not so good info here all the time. If you read enough of it, you'll soon start to recognize the difference. There is a good search tool on here, that's very helpful. There are lots of good people, a few jerks, and a couple jerks that are really good people. (This thread is a good example)

I wish the internet existed when i first got started. Information is out there. Keep seeking it.

By the way, Welcome!

There are no stupid questions.......only stupid stupid people that ask questions. :D

If you want to get a dog do yourself a favor and let a knowledgeable retriever person help you find one.

There are many many ads for retrievers here in the classified section. Also entry express has a nice classifieds.

A friend called me a couple of months ago. He has a very nice registered female that he bred to an unregistered full blooded male that he rescued and couldn't get the papers on. He had friends that wanted pups so he had a litter. He called to offer me one for free because he knows I do retriever games. I politely declined. What I am saying is you couldn't give me an unregistered dog.

I have had a couple of unregistered rescue dogs, but that is a different story.

Good luck and welcome to RTF whatever you decide.

Just remember a Bitch is easier to find a Stud for, than a Stud is to find a Bitch for. Bitch owners are very particular in who they will breed to. Quality Bitch owners are even more so. They only get so many litters, and only want to take so much time off from running to think about breeding. If you want to get a good bitch for your stud, he will need to be papered, have health clearance, and have titles; unless you have a friend who really likes your dog, but even then it's a toss up.

they (the Lab folk) will not need to google, your gonna have fun Kid!
Those are not 'zactly minor lines...;-)

.
what do you mean by that? See i had posted on a different forum that i just wanted to learn what i should look for in a lab pup when i want to pick one out one day so that i could have it to hunt and be a friend and he sent me an e-mail. He said he just had a litter of puppies born and had seen my post on this other forum. he called me to talk to me about these puppies. he made me a deal since i want to get into all this "dog stuff" and isnt going to charge me much for one and help me out to a little with stuff... The man who has these puppies has had labs befor and all the papers to go with them and has them trained really well. but me posting that bout the google the blood lines... dose that help with people telling me about the lines and health checks and such?

so.... FC AFC High Tech CEO or YellowStones TNT Explosion are the grand parents?

What health clearances do the PARENTS have?

EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse)?
Do the parents hips and elbows have OFA clearances?
Were they tested from CNM? (Centrolneuclear Myopothy?)

These are important questions to ask the breeder... you don't want to end up with a puppy that has these genetic diseases because they could be serious and end up causing you a lot of heart ache.....

Just because the grandparents were high-titled dogs doesn't mean you shouldn't be asking these questions about the parents

Not trying to scare you.. but you came here asking questions and these are some you should ask the breeder.

i guess i should have posted that earlyer about the lins of wich the dogs are from.
Your original post made it sound (to me, anway) like the breeder was going to make you pay extra for "papers" or you might not be able to get them at all. I think that's why a lof of the people responding here suggested that you do more research on the litter you're looking at. I don't think any reputable breeder would a) make you pay extra for registration papers or b) not provide you with registration papers. So, by you asking about papers, it made people (me) leery about the type of breeder you were dealing with.

If the dogs you listed are your puppy's grandparents, then there's a pretty good chance that you are dealling with a highly reputable breeder who also happens to be a really nice guy and wants to help a newbie out.

he isnt going to make me pay extra for the papers. he told me he would help me out with getting all the papers started too. i really think he is a good breeder and is really wanting to help a newbie like me out..

Get the names of the parents, go to www.offa.org and look them up. That will tell you hips, hopefully elbow clearances and CERF (eye) if they sent them in, some don't. If CERF isn't on OFA, ask for a copy of the AVCO exam of both parents. If BOTH PARENTS of this litter are not on OFA and the breeder doesn't at least have an OFA prelim evaluation (meaning they were done before the final eval at or after age 2), walk away from the litter regardless of the price. It won't matter who the grandparents are. As well, you need to make sure one of the parents of this litter is EIC CLEAR and CNM clear. Some will suggest PRA as well. Ask for the paperwork. Pedigree doesn't matter if the health isn't there. Cheap up front can cost dearly down the road.

also if u are close to where this trainer lives drive by there and watch him train. u can also offer to help him train by being a bird boy or help cleaning the kennels. ask lots of questions . later he will be able to help u with your dog. like someone said get a book or find someone to borrow one from.

im still trying to get a reply back from the one retreiver club thats gonna be around here soon
Which one I'm on the BOD of Del Bay and there is an active HRC club even nearer than that, right over the line near HDGrace or near there.

If you like, PM me with the breeders name I'll see if I recognize them.

john

I don't think anyone suggested this that I saw in a quick scan....

Go have him "collected" and have his semen stored until you find your perfect bitch for him? I don't know cost now but, someone should be able to help? I know its pretty reasonable.
