I put out the offer for several Texas folks on a waterfowl forum I frequent. The offer was to host a get together/training day. Many of us have winter pups that need socialization, water intro, gun fire intro.........

What are some rules you would stipulate?

I already said current on all shots, dogs to be on lead at all times unless working. What am I forgetting?

Only 2 dogs can be run by an individual handler on each set up.

specify who brings the grill, who brings the burgers, who brings the beer....

Split into two groups. Group x runs dogs while group y does the work, and vice-versa. Also if someone doesn't volunteer for some sort of work, then volunteer them. If you don't help your not invited back.

Everybody bring a radio, chair, blank pistol and an umbrella.

Somebody bring a holding blind and a mat.

Set up something pretty big that will work for everyone and run your dog on what he needs. Singles, doubles, move the line right or left to open things up. Move up with the younger dogs.

Have fun.

Excellent advice.

Here is a bit of advice from an experience that happened to me from a now disbanded FT club in Texas...I had/have unlimited access to about 500+ acres just south of Austin, lots of water, big grazing fields, no snakes (poisonous ones) and one heck of a duck hunting place..it belonged to a long time friend of the family. I hosted a training day for my pals and basically we had a picnic trial since it was big enough to run multiple set ups..

Well about a week later,I get a call from the owner wanting to know what all the dog trucks are doing at the farm...seems like my new found pals thought the place was now the new club grounds and it was share and share alike or what was mine was also theirs..it cost me lots of groveling, dispersed among apologies, and having to replace all the locks on the various entrances to the property...

Moral to the story: be the first to let everyone in the property and be the last to leave, never give out the gate combo, and make people aware it was a one time deal...there were even a couple of people that tried to approach the owner and lease the place out from under me

I have since learned who I can bring to train to that area;-)

Good advice. It's my place, I live here and the gates stay locked 24/7. I'm locked and loaded if ya know what I mean :D

fourpointsrc.org has a set of training guidlelines on there sigth that I like

I've been down the same road Bon has. It's amazing the gall that some folks have. Your situation is different but keep it in mind if you find other grounds and make it clear from the outset that under no circumstances is anyone to contact the landowner about training or hunting let alone just show up. I just secured a bunch of new training property and believe you me, this is the very first thing that will be addressed with every person who joins me.

The one thing I was going to add is to state that training is from "x" AM until "y" PM and everyone is expected to be there until at least (fill in the blank) o'clock. This will tell folks that it is not an all day affair unless you want it to be and that folks who show up had better not pull the old run their dog or two in a series then leave due to "family obligations." I've seen one schmuck pull this stuff again and again in one training group that I used to be part of. Just about every group will have one of these parasites if someone doesn't lay down the law.

In addition to the other good advice you might want to consider:
1. Everyone arrives at the same time.

2. Everyone leaves at the same time.

3. Everyone takes their turn at the gunner stations.

Ensures that no one person gets stuck with all the work.

The biggest problem I see at any event that we do is that a lot of work is done by very few. Be prepared to face the same dilemma.

The first thing I ask when going to new grounds(for me ) is "you have permission for all of us?" followed by conversation to ascertain who needs to be present for me to use the property now and in the future. And can I meet the landowner ?
A long time ago a man said come back anytime ,with or without him ,because the owner didn't mind as long as we closed the gate .The landowner DID mind ,and I got an earful .Though I did get permission to use the place ,and still do ,the other guy got it even worse .
And take turns setting up the scenario. If it is terrible ,someone hopefully will tell you and tweak it .
And turn off the "gotta win" switch . Have fun:)

one thing that burns people's arse is those who come, run a dog a leave, so if you can't stay for the whole session, please refrain

are you doing fliers for this thing? whose bringing the birds? you already took care of the beer, obviously.

we ask everyone to have a white jacket or LONG SLEEVE shirt as well for those who would like it in the field when they train thier dog
