What would some of you recomend as a good shampoo for your lab ?
I have a 6 year old Black Male Lab and would like to get some of that shine back in his coat. Maybe some of the show dog experts can chime in.
Thanks.

I have never shampooed any of my dogs. It washes the oils out of their coat that helps them dry quickly. If they can't dry properly then they can get cold. So, if you don't want them to get cold just let them swim or rinse them off with clean water. Just my .02.

Thanks BHB. I know that most shampoos with depleate the natural oils in a labs coat so that is why I was asking if anyone knew of a product or products taht will help their coats without drying them out or depleating their natural oils etc.

When I do have to shampoo my dogs I use baby shampoo or an orange extract puppy shampoo. However, shampoo does not condition or restore the coat. You can do that through diet. Be sure you are feeding a good quality food, and if needed, add supplements like fish oil capsules or salmon oil drops to boost Omega 3's which will improve skin and coat.

I rarely bathe our dogs. Usually only if they get in something really smelly...foul nasty muck, where they're plunging down into the anaerobic bacteria and such.

The other day my black lab was dancing around the tub as my two sons were taking a bath. I decided to give him permission to get in.

I washed him with Old Spice bodywash for men. A Xmas present from years ago, because it is what was there. In the past I've used whatever cheap Suave brand shampoo was available at the store.

This Old Spice was awesome. Everybody that saw him wanted to smell him again.... (except for my one training partner and hunting pal...who made fun of me)

The next day he had a few white flakes and I hit him with the furminator and got some undercoat out. He looked and smelled great. Heck, I might hit him again with the Old Spice soon.

My daughter and I showed our wire fox terrier and competed in obedience and agility. We liked Orvis paste shampoo. This dog had a bath about 3 times a month. It is used by a lot of people who show horses, cattle in 4-H as well as dogs. It is good stuff and some people use it to wash delicate linens. It is concentrated and comes in a big bucket that lasts several years.

I don't do show dogs and I agree with the less is more bathing strategy. However I have bathed my dogs, I use horse shampoo. Cowboy Magic Rosewater shampoo and conditioner. It does not lather a ton, rinse easily, has a GREAT smell, and makes my black lab GLOW she is so shiny.

I got it as a free sample for my horse with another purchase. I don't do horse shampoos either. Usually just ivory soap (dish soap). I ran out of soap and wash my horses legs every time I ride. After a couple days the color on his legs was SO much better, the shine was incredible and it resists dirt. I am SOLD!

I started using the John Paul Pet Products last year. I liked them so much we started carring them. John Paul Pet is made by Paul Mitchell Hair products. And its tested on humans first!!

The Tea Tree is a great product that will even help with fea and tick control- or so I'm told by my rep. It leaves the hair very soft and shinie.

Obsessed,

Any good quality dog shampoo should work fine. Human shampoos are not ph balanced for dogs.

I have used many of the top manufactures shampoos in my kennel over the years and Groomers Edge by Double K Ind. has been one of the best product lines of shampoos in the professional grooming world.

ULIMATE is a great product and 50:1 mixture so it's very economical to use.

Emerald Black is fantastic for black or dark colored dogs. 32:1 mixture

Shampoos don't make shine in your dogs coat. It has to be there to start with. So if your dogs coat is in need of some extra help for shine I highly recommend Animal Naturals Show Stopper All In One coat and body supplement. http://www.k9power.com/

My dog's don't get bathed that often unless they are into something gross, but when I do bath them I use Johnson & Johnson No More Tears baby shampoo. Very gentle. Doesn't seem to deplete the oils in their fur as other shampoos do. Also not a big deal if a little splashes in their eyes during the bath as it does not sting.

I use a mixture of equal parts liquid clear Softsoap, white vinegar and water. Try it and you'll never go back to anything else.
I would love to know the pH of a dog's skin and why washing them with something that is not exactly the same pH harms them. I've heard this argument for years and think there's no foundation for it.

HAve always used pert plus. He looks shiny when he is clean, Lather rinse repeat....

He also has always gotten Omega 3's
