So my pup is 7weeks going on 8. Last week out 5 min sessions were great, worked sitting crate training and had him retrieving a stuff animal.

This week he sits perfect , dont mess in the kennel but his retrieves have gone to about every other one. These are very informal sessions but last week he went like a bullet to bring it back. today was a ruff day, leaving me several times to get the dummy. I ended on a good retrieve tho. I think I messed him up. I got a little bag of treats and gave him a treat when he did well, well now the little fat sucker sits there looking at me waiting on a treat. Am i expecting too much? sorry just excited to get to work

Yes, back way off on the retrieves please.

Many folks, with puppies that turn out to be National Field Champions and other incredible achievements, have pups that whiz in their crates for six months and all sorts of other stuff.

Enjoy the things that are coming to you guys naturally. Do not sweat the things that you may perceive as desirable today, that your puppy may appear to not understand yet. In the long run, it is best to let pup be a pup, be a good role model, and grow pup into what you want.

Rome was not built in a day. Little baby puppies are only that for a very short time.

Enjoy it!

Chris

Sounds like too many retrieves to me, 3 retrieves and no more at one time leaving them wanting more.... sometimes you may only do 2 quit on a good note.

thanks thats exactly what i needed to hear. This will be my second dog to train but i picked up my other at a much older age. I was doing maybe 6 or 7 retrieves. I ordered the Hillmans book.

I will be getting Hillman's book as well. I've heard very good reviews. You are never too old or too experienced to learn new things, anyone who tells you different is full of it. Good luck with your puppy, give him lots of love and play lots of game with him.

Thanks to you guys for all of the knowledge being provided here. I'm getting my first puppy in about 3 weeks, and I can already tell all of you will be a great help.

I am not a total rookie, but I have to force myself to continue the reality checks every day with my puppy! He changes day to day and its my job to keep it all fun for him. One day he is all about retrieving dummies and I pretty much limit it to about 3 retrieves every couple of days. If it is a day I "plan" on tossing him a few and he looks more interested in butterflies and Scout's tail, I change my plan! Sometimes when we work on "sit" "sit-stay" "remote sit" I think he is the smartest little bugger on 4 legs. THis morning when I told him sit, he leaped up and bit me in the arze.....and hung on!!! Ouch!!!! So just chill with him and enjoy the changes. Now I am going to spray bitter apple on my butt and go out and play with my puppy;).

The important thing to remember here is that your PUP is only 8 weeks old. You don't want to push the issue on training now and leave him with a bad taste in his mouth later on. They are crazy smart and learn fast, and sometimes the hardest part is slowing ourselves down.
