I've had ok luck using borax/water solution. It retards the growth...really doesn't kill it...you have to spray it while it's young.....a buddy of mine swears by a product made by Ortho for creeping charlie.....that stuff is a pain

I am not sure there is anything that can kill it. They say they can have roots up to 5 miles long!

The only weed killers that are successful at killing creeping charlie are weed killers that contain dicamba. Even dicamba is only successful if applied several times at the right time. I'v used both Gordon's Trimec and Weed-B-Gone Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer. I've also mixed the two together into a super-cocktail when I've been particularily upset with the creeping charlie around the farmhouse.

In order to kill creeping charlie, you have to apply dicamba based herbicide to your lawn in early fall when creeping charlie plant is growing most actively which will leave it weakened enough so that it will have a difficult time surviving the winter. A master gardner told me that the creeping charlie stores the herbicide in it's root system in preparation for winter. I will usually try to get a second application in on those last nice days of the fall before the first killing frost. You then apply it again in the late spring when the stuff is in bloom, followed 14 days later with a final application.

Also, only apply dicamba herbicide 3 days after mowing and do not mow for 3 days after applying it. This will allow the creeping charlie to grow more leaves, which will cause it to take in more herbicide and then will allow time for the herbicide to work through the plant’s system.

A couple of applications of Round-Up works too

As soon as you see it cut the grass. 2-3 days later spray with Trimec, get it from the elevator or farm store. Cut the grass a few days later then reapply 2-3 days later. It usually takes a follow up application to get it completely.

My turf grass degree is good for something I guess.

Ortho Weed B Gone Maximum plus Crabgass Grass Killer. It will kill creeping charlie and the creeping ivy. The creeping ivy has the purple flowers and a smell after it is cut. Many mix the two up. It should be applied as the new spring shoots are appearing and applied again a month later. It comes in a bottle you attach to the hose and then you can purchase more concentrated for the second application.

Remember you cannot put seed down for 30 days after the second application.

I work at Menards in the garden center and I learned about the Ortho products shortly after I began working there. I have recommended it to many guests and never heard that it hasn't worked. Oh, it will take care of the creeping clover also.

The best single product I have found is the version of Speedzone (there are several), with these actives:
Carefentrazone-ethyl..............0.62%
2,4-D 2-ethylhexyl ester..........28.57%
Mecoprop-p Acid......................5.88%
Dicamba Acid...........................1.71%

The combination of 2,4-D ester, mecoprop (aka: mcpp) and dicamba is key.

But if you apply at the wrong time of year you will just waste your money. My application schedule is:
1 application in spring when in flower
2 applications in fall several weeks apart around time of first frost

I also tank mix with a "spreader-sticker"

Don't expect complete eradication without making other major changes to the turf. Often Creeping Charlie is symptom of other problems.
