J-Bo, J-Biscuit, Joshy, J-Man, J-Dog... he had lots of names. But "Josh" was the name given to him by Aaron Kelly's father, Dwayne. Dwayne purchased Josh as a puppy and I remember the day he picked up him from Slate Rock Kennels. I thought to myself, really... he's naming him Josh? "Josh-Kelly's Bounty Hunter" to be exact!

Aaron taught his dad the basics of how to train Josh to be a hunting dog and how to maintain a standard of obedience and diligence. The implementation of which did not go as smooth as it sounded. I remember hunting with Dwayne and Josh and the phone call to Aaron after the hunt saying "dude, you really need to talk to your dad about being consistent, he goes from milliary obedience to loving on him and scratching his belly and baby talk in like 5 seconds." Aaron said "believe me... i know".

Aaron lost his father only a few short years later and Josh went to live with Aaron and Melissa. He was a mess, in a goofy way, and an unmistakable character. It's impossible not to fall in love with his sweet face, big floppy ears, and the "Josh smile" smirk he'd make when you found just the right spot to scratch.

Aaron started over with Josh, from the beginning, and incorporated him into his daily training routine.

He won a Qual and finished/placed in several others. Without much higher expectations, Aaron kept training him with the other dogs and gradually decreased the physical effort as Josh got older. In 2006, he got an Amateur 3rd.

By this time, Aaron and I co-owned Boogie together and Aaron suggested that I start running Josh in the Amateur with Boogie. He probably wasn't going to set the world on fire, but we messed around and finished a few and had a lot of fun doing it. It was also my excuse to keep Josh at my house as much as possible... he loved being a house dog and we loved having him.

My house, specifically my bed, was Josh's second home. Anytime Aaron need to free up a kennel run or they went out of town, Josh would come live the "resort life", as Aaron called it, at our house.

We all bond with our dogs but Aaron and Josh had a special relationship. Bonded by the loss they suffered - having both lost their dad - they comforted each other and served as a constant reminder to each other of the great father, friend, and mentor they once shared.

I will forever cherish my dear friends Aaron and Melissa for allowing me to be a part of Josh's life.

Staci and I are extremely saddened by the loss they are suffering right now and ask that you say an extra prayer for the Kelly's; as they lost much more than a dog yesterday.

Shayne & Staci

Lots of birds, treats, and couches are waiting for you old friend. RIP J-Bo

I remember meeting Josh at Central Arkansas RC FT a few years back I do believe...I know it was hard to resist his sad eyes and graying face. Isn't he the logo dog for Dog's Afield? Anyway...condolences to the Kelly's for their loss of Josh and to you and Staci, may Josh enjoy living the resort life and may all his birds be fliers!

Yep that was Joshy at Central Arkansas. He's the only dog i've ever seen that will line up, pointing directly at wherever you want him to go, but you see his eyebrows twitch and lean down in front of him - his eyes are looking where HE wants to go. It's funny after the fact, not funny when you are trying to get him to look off a flyer lol.

The Dogs Afield dog is Cosmo, she is one of the Carruth's dogs that passed away a few years ago.

Wonderful tribute! They are never here long enough. My sympathy to the Kelly's and your family.

I left out a critical statistic... Killer (Melissa Kelly) actually ran Josh in a Qualifying... the only dog she has ever ran in a trial. I believe she got 4th. She runs all the dogs regularly in training, but Josh was the only one she ever ran in a trial. :)

Everyone on our circuit knows Aaron and Melissa. They help at every trial they attend, avoid the drama/bs/politics (i do it enough for all three of us), and you will never hear anyone say a negative thing about them. They are the kind of people this sport needs and it is very difficult to watch our good friends suffer through their loss.

Really nice tribute Shayne.

Prayers sent, along with a big hug.

Aaron and I both still have dogs born in 1998. Their bodies may show their age, but their minds are getting younger acting by the day.

I'm going to have to be committed when Bailey passes away. I pray every day for him to live long enough that Owen can remember him. I'm taking lots of pictures and videos, just incase. Owen's first word was BAILEY, before da-da or momma. He says it constantly. I cry just thinking about the inevitable. But, we have to remind ourselves - the joy they bring us during their short time makes it all worth it.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Josh played many roles in his life. They included meat dog, hunt test dog, field trial dog, builder of friendships, licker of tears, babysitter and caretaker to our pack. He is missed.
Melissa and I owe a huge thank you to Dr. Aycock and his staff at Lewisville North Animal Clinic a first class act indeed. Thier professionalism and kindness are surley unmatched.
Again, thanks everyone. It's a beautiful day here and I'm going out to train. Hope you are too.

Well, Mr. Dwayne has his dog back in the heavens.... only right since they started out together. My condolences to the humans that Josh left behind. He obviously did his job well here on earth - lover of humans, maker of friends...

God Speed Josh. May all your marks be flyers.........

I remember that NAHRA hunt test we ran together with Bailey puppy and Flash puppy in 1999, DFWHRA and NAHRA were booming at the time. I was training with Aaron and the rest of our old training group back then.

Aaron was running Booster in AKC Juniors and then he ran a derby, getting a Reserve Jam with Booster when he was 11 months old. It's been field trials ever since.

A LOT has changed in the last 13 years, but the one thing that stays the same is our love for our four legged family members.

Shayne, don't forget that Josh was a first class working dog for Aaron in his second job as guide at our Duck Club of Oklahoma guide service.

I'm sorry for your loss, Shayne, but particularly sad for Aaron and Mellisa. You wrote a very touching tribute. Rest in Peace Josh.

Yessir. He was a great duck dog. Just bring your ear plugs because he was not very patient in his old age and he'd let you know about it. Good thing you guys keep the dogs busy up there chasing those Ducknados. Yall give Oklahoma storm chasing a whole new meaning.

They are all greenheads in Heaven J-man.
