I think coats like fronts were not a consideration when breeding dogs for performance. I'm not going to comment on going back to other breeds to get those traits. I don't know anything about that. I do know in general that performance bred labs have shown very little consideration for either.

That's not just your humble opinion about the ACLs, it's pretty well known in veterinary orthopedic circles that one cause of the increase in ACL issues is lack of rear angulation.

The fronts are very straight and the front legs are placed too far forward. Shoulder lay back is also poor. I disagree with Windycanyon seeing too much angulation in the rear. The rears I see on field dogs are very straight with a weak second thigh. Hence why we see so many ACL tears IMHO.

Back to the original question at hand!
I have seen several very nice specimens sired by Watermarks The Boss,
and also Hawkeyes Candlewood Shadow.
Have heard that Shaq is and produces good type, although have never seen him, or his get. I suppose the dam line has as much to do with it also-
Have a very lovely Grady daughter now, who I think is going to be a real looker. Lots of bone, very nice broad head, good feet.;) Time will tell, her mom was also the type I like to look at and have heard good about Grady as well.
I also, enjoy the Hiwood lineage too, very attractive.

Also the dogs are not square. They are too long in the loin.

Our field dogs are bred now to be long distance sprinters. Not the gentleman's hunting dog of old. I'm not saying show dogs by and large are the "gentleman's hunting dog of old" but I think they're closer when in shape to what the standard is meant to be. I'm not talking about the over done "specials" in the breed ring.

I'm all for a good looking dog that's correct in conformation that's easy to train and easy to live with.

+1, except while they may be longer (weaker) in the loin, they are usually pretty close to square when measured from point of shoulder to point of buttock and then from withers to ground. A little longer than taller is preferable...maybe an inch or so.

Otherwise, what Angie said.

That's your opinion... Certainly not mine...;)

For one thing, both dogs have substance and bone, and adequate coat...something often lacking in some FT lines. I'm not going to dissect them here...certainly not fair to their owners. No dog is perfect, but for me personally, I look for a balance between performance and structure.

Any field trial dogs you'd recommend? ;)

A conformation Labrador with Field Trial attributes is like a draft horse with Kentucky Derby aspirations.

Sharon: Thanks for you input. I have to agree with you on Wing's Magic Louisiana Roux. I train with two of his pups, Ammo and Primo both of them are well put together.

Billie: I have seen Shaq and he is one of the best looking FT dog around and you mentioned Cnadlewood's Shadow. Maybe it comes from Honest Abe by the way of McGuffy.

I'm talking about sickle hocks (see diagrams posted earlier), and yes, they seem to be all too common where I am. I am not seeing the straight/post legs that you are talking about at hunt tests in field lines though I have seen less than adequate rear angles in some show stock.

I agree,,, I know one dog personally and the other I've never seen.

As far as FT lines I haven't found anything that I can get too excited about in regards to type. I usually like the pedigree, brain and temperament.

Steve I have seen some nicely put together dogs out of Jazztime lines, sure you have had a lot of opportunities also. Here is one example. This dog was bred for the field but a great deal of consideration was on performance (athletic) conformation. I think you may have judged this dog.

We also whelped a litter of pups from a Chance dam and sired by FC AFC Way Da Go Call of the Wild ( Roux Littermate). These pups have very good looks, angles looked good at 8 weeks, we'll see how they look at 2 yrs. Kept one of them and am very pleased so far with talent, temperment and intellegence again we'll see at 2 yrs.

Doug (and WRL) -- I saw Willie's boy Jet at the hunt test a couple weeks ago and he's looking good! I wish Joan would have put Willie in the CC a few years ago when we had the chance.

Howdy has some nice stuff behind him looks wise too--- I'd have like to have seen Westwinds Bold Tiger in person as it seems like he's behind a lot of the nicer field dogs.

I think w/ the chocs we have a little better chance w/ getting good coats too.

So I'm going to ask a question that might get me flamed - but does stacking a dog help hide some of its structural flaws or at least make them appear less obvious?
