Where are you and what is your interest level? Ohio Valley Retriever Club is in central Ohio area and Buckeye Retriever club is north east. Those are two AKC clubs and I am sure that there are other venues around in the south east/central area. Connecting with a club is an option. There should be many experienced folks who can help you with "hands on" watching and learning. Books and videos are wonderful but many times can't really address an immediate concern.

Jim Weitzel goes by jd6400 here on the RTF, he learned from his dad who was a long time FT circuit pro

We have a kennel about 1 hour from the Ohio Line in Topeka, Indiana. 45 minutes North-west of Fort Wayne. We offer gun dog/hunt test training, and run quite a few hunt tests with multiple titled dogs. You can see our website for more information - www.trinityoaklabs.com, or give me a ring at 574-971-1366.

Thanks!

Try Hunters Rose Kennels in Dundee, MI. 5 mins from Cabelas (i'm guessing you know where that is)

Dale is a Heck of a trainer, took both my pups through Basics, FF, CC and I couldn't be happier, they are 10 mos and 21 mos. They will both be going back later this summer.

Google: "hunters rose kennel" it'll pop up at the top of the list (I dont have enough posts to post the website address)

Mitch White, Gamekeepers, central Ohio. gamekprs.com

Gun dog and hunt test, works with all retriever (and other) breeds, does problem-solving, too. He and his wife Maria are great friends, so I'm biased, but I also think he's a great trainer.

I'll second Mitch White, he's a good trainer and just as important, good at training the owner. His website is gamekprs.com.

You didn't say whether you were northeast or northwest Ohio.

Northeast, you might try Kathy Heintel at Treasure Lake Chesapeakes at Kathy@tlcdogs.net or Bob Reckart, who is back training dogs, at 440-563-1548.

Dawm Fleming is also doing some private training. You can contact her at goodawgz@yahoo.com

Good luck with your search.

If youre interested in seeing the pros in action they'll all be at Buckeye Retriever Club's grounds (address below) for hunt tests on June 11-12, and June 17-18. Good place to introduce yourself and get a feel for who you might want to work with.

Good Luck.

Carolyn Elam or Steve Earick are both great trainers.

No doubt Steve Earick of Misty Morning Retrievers, passed 4 out of 5 at the Miss. Grand this past spring, plus many other titles over the last several years. A great trainer, a very personable family man who also hunts. Lives in Ind. close to Cincinnati.
