That is just so sad, but it just goes to show how devoted dogs really are.

Absolutely heartbreaking! I (as many folks) have lost a good friend and know others serving, this keeps it all in perspective. My condolences to his family and friends.

God bless Jon, God bless His family, and God bless Hawkeye. Here is a case where the other side of the team may be waiting at Rainbow bridge. Is there anyone in that area that knows the friend Nicolos I think that is taking Hawkeye. Would be cool to have him keep running Hawkeye.

Very sad indeed. We lost a family friend on Memorial Day in combat and it has been tough going. On a bright note I know the new owner and he does have labs that he runs in hunt test. However I am not sure if Scott is planning on running with the new lab or not.

That is touching. I hope the new owner runs the dog in HT and lists Tumlinson as the alternate handler in every event. That is how I would remember my friend in his place.

I didn't need to read the article... a picture tells a thousand words. God bless our troops.

Wow that's tough to look at.

Wow is all I can come up with. The bond between retriever and handler is an amazing thing. How can anyone not love dog?

Is the dog's new owner in Texas?

Yes he lives in Texas.
thanks, Coachmo....I hsent you a PM, then realized that you probably can't get them yet. Anyway I was able to make contact with someone who knows him. Thanks for mentioning that the dog has been running tests in Texas. We will be looking for him in the future!

This photo was taken by Tumilson's cousin, Lisa Pembleton. It shows Hawkeye lying by the casket. Pembleton wrote on Facebook that Hawkeye was Tumilson’s loyal pet who wouldn't leave his master’s side during the funeral in Rockford, Iowa.

“I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn't make it or couldn't see what I could from the aisle,” Pembleton wrote.
Another mourner took a video which was posted on YouTube (below).
I adore dogs (or "puppies" as we call them in our family). My affection for them is driven in large part by their seemingly unending unconditional love. I think, since I've had kids, the feeling is even stronger. This story makes me smile and tear up at the same time.
