Just loaded up the car with gun, shells, check cord, water, etc.... I am not a big Dove hunting fan---darn things are impossible to hit. This is for the dog! Looks good, plenty of birds. First live bird interaction since duck season.

Got the gun out and spastic lab pup (now 18 months) went nuts. Planning on using a check cord, whistle, and not sure if I will use a collar??? Any thoughts??? What am I missing?
Would you use a collar on the first day with live bird retrieves. By no means is this his first into to birds-----but it as been seven months. ???? BTW, I know the proper way to use a collar, but sometimes error on liniency.

Will hopefully post pics of 'The ultimate Dove poppers" Lot's of bacon.

Take care, and have fun if you are hunting tomorrow--I am only taking 10 shells--not true!

John

the last time I hunted the California opener was 8 yrs ago in Ripley just outside of Blythe...the gunfire was like a war zone, I actually got nicked by a stray pellet....never again..temp was 112...be safe out there, lots of crazies who only "hunt" once a year

It opens here saturday, but on opening day you can't shoot until noon :( and by then it will be over 90 degrees. I might take a dog or two but they will get to do alot of sitting and watching though. After the first day we can hunt in the mornings when it's a little cooler :)

My thoughts are that you should take me and Pilot with you one of these days. :D
Melanie, you are killing me! Be at my house at 5:30. You are in! I have to be back at class at 9:00. Could be quick. Playing hookie first period. Bad Example:(

That won't happen on this hunt, but have been there.

I am always scared to bring a dog for the dove opener. Heat and crazy people. I have had the same experience as Bon. Also those little feathers are like glue in that hot dogs mouth. Last year we had a "cool snap" (85 degrees) so I went with a buddy to a little spot where "they limit the number of hunters".... Well.... Not sure what the limit was. We got in a shady spot, pup marked over 60 birds and got to pick up 4. Lots of good steadying and no bird practice. There was a guy out there that had a dog, the once a year kind of dog, and was claiming each bird his dog picked up. He had to walk his dog out to any birds over 50 yards. The group I was with was pretty aggravated with it. Right before we left Tooka marked a dove 2/3 of the way between us, probably 150 yards out. He was yelling about "My Bird", so I had a hot dog moment and sent her. She was fired up after watching all those birds and snatched it up on the way by as they were trying to get there. The whole field erupted in laughter. We left.

Come to my neighborhood. Stupid things just stand in the middle of the road. Dog could probably catch em!

Dove and early goose opens here tomorrow! Nothing like grassing up the mutt hutt at midnight by way of truck headlights!!! Let the fun begin!

I didn't check the computer last night. It sounds like maybe opening day would not have been the best day for us to day to tag along but we really would like to join you when it's convenient for you. Question though, since I'm not a morning person, could we take the afternoon shift? ;-):D

How was the shooting today anyway?

I was contemplating taking a few hours off tomorrow morning to head up to White Slough and see what is flying around the ponds up there?

Melanie , we need to get you in a different routine. How could a retriever person not like mornings? We were done by Eight. Not a huge flight, but not bad for grape hunting. I hunted about a 1/4 mile from my house. My wife won't let me hunt in the back yard--she calls it the sanctuary.

The "sanctuary" would have been better. Maybe we can get a re-designation and do an afternoon hunt in the back yard. Or, better yet we will make sure she is at work and she will never know;) Had several friends that shot a safflower field and they all limited very quickly. And, BTW- I am not shooting for you. Not sure what you mean by tag along----but I wanna see you with a gun! Maybe one day next week? I will let you know if it looks promising.

BTW--do Golden's retrieve dove? :p

You have my address right---think I sent it in a PM I'm on Cherry rd about 4 miles from town.

Take care melanie

Mark, not sure about White slough. It was decent here, but not as many as I have seen in most years. Good luck if you go. John

Weather channel says 104 here right now and I'm about to load up the dog and hit one of the only watering holes around. Taking ice water for the dog and ice beer for the handler, but only a 12 pack.
Think a 12 pack will be enough? You might consider a 30 pack:p

That is pretty good Bon!:) We do have some great Zins here. My buddies hunted the safflower field next to Van-reutin winery. Their Zin was the world gold medal winner a few years back. sounded like lots of limits, and I suspect a few pellets may have found their way into the grapes--and they were picking today! Careful what you imbibe from lodi.

is there a limit on undocumented migrant farm workers :p:p

Crush should be right around the corner, always a madhouse at the wineries this time of the year...if I throw birds at the National this fall,I will definitely be returning with some bottles of wine in the truck...maybe even a stop at Ikedas Market in Auburn for lunch and a slice of berry pie
