re: Retriever News: letter to the editor

Just wanted to say thnk you. Van Qualls and John H. Ball. Your letters were excellent. If anyone wants to know what I'm talking about read them. They are important.

Thank you again.

Which issue? I just got my August issue and saw nothing of particular note in the letters section.

I thought Jack Gwaltney's letter in the July issue was very interesting and was surprised that didn't come up here.

I'm sorry the September issue page 5 "Letters To The Editor"

Ah. Don't have that one yet. Looks like the deal is I wait until the end of the month, send them a not asking where my magazine is and then they send it.
You know it's a available online the first day of the month, right?

Yeah, I did know that. I don't have a login, though and can't seem to get one from them.

The two authors will have to paraphrase what they wrote.

Van Qualls gave his opinion regarding FT judging. He discusses the need to see the marks, see the dogs pick up the marks. He liked Patti Roberts comments in the may 2011 issue and feels we all should read it. He then goes on to say "How do you "educate" or change the thinking of a man who has qualified his dog for both nationals, sat on the Board of the Retriever News, and had the privilege to train under a top pro for years?"

John Ball's letter discussed the "True Amateur" - that are dinosaurs of field trials and nearly extinct: this is the amateur that still has a job, one or two dogs they train themselves and compete in 6-10 trials per year. He equates the extinction of the True Amateur as what to has led to the inability to understand dog behavior, train and set tests. And, this is why tests have become more "mechanical." Dr. Ball also relates this to the lack of understanding of "the Standard" .....

Both well written, with great thoughts................. deserves a direct read.

The problem with that is I still have not received my magazine for last month.
the mailman isnt done reading it yet...:p:p I received my Aug issue on the 18th, I got my Sept issue last week on the 7th....and we wonder why the USPS is losing money every year

LOL. I doubt the postman/postwoman would find anything in that magazine as readable.

You can call them, and they will give it to you over the phone.!:D
Thank you. I'll have to do that then. Maybe I can get the hard copy mailed to me as well.

I would really like to get RN again. But as of a year ago, you could not buy the "online" edition only. You had to purchase the paper subscription. I have not had a mailing address for 18 months as I have been on the road. Anybody know if there has been any change to this policy? Seems like a I am reading a lot about interesting and different articles and format from the mere "stats posting" they used to do.

Carol - just have your paper copy sent to me ;)
