Those of you who may take an extra moment to follow hockey (when you are not out training or sitting in a duck blind) might find this video presented by the NHL interesting – NHL Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine (in his new position as head coach of the Long Island Royals) has brought on a young women to coach the “boys” in power skatingJ. I find it particularly interesting because it features my daughter Jacki Munzel as the power coach of the Royals. In another life Jacki was a Figure Skater on at least 4 USA World Teams – there used to be something in my life besides dogs and ducks.

As you can tell… I am proud of her:D.

It's funny the rink my wife works at some of the figure skating coaches are the ones who teach power skating, stroking, and use of edges
Yup - it's because the figure skaters really know how to use their edges and get into their knees in order to get the most power out of each stroke:)

What level of Hockey is this. It looks like High School by the braces and youth looks. My son(9yrs.) watched the video with me.
He is a 2nd yr. Squirt.

I need all the skating and hockey advice I can get my hands on. I just started playing hockey and its the most difficult sport thus far. After being on the ice, I give figure skaters a whole new respect.

The group she is training in the video is the Midget National Team (Midget Majors - 16 and 17 yr. olds); they are currently ranked 2nd in the Nation. You can't tell in the video, but she has taped their knees together to teach them to "skate on their skates" - to pull their feet underneath them to teach them balance. When they first went out for the first 15 min. all they did was fall. :) This video is like a "reality" series, and NHL will follow them throughout the season; there are blogs by both players and coaches. Tell your son to checkout "Y athlete - Steve Webb's site" on Facebook.... she says it is a very cool site for setting goals and getting inspiration.

I had a gentleman by the name of Dick Vraa as my power skating coach. A figure skater who worked with many NHL hockey teams. Very demanding, very tough, he got you to use different muscles you didn't know existed.

Pat Lafontaine was one of my favorites, especially since we are pretty close in age. Very gifted skater and a magician with the puck!!

Very true! I played a little bit of hockey growing up,but being from virginia there was not that big of a follwoing. Especially when compared to football and baseball. I now play on a men's adult league, and when I needed to work on my skating I ended up getting with a few figure skaters to improve on my skating. You have a whole new level of respect for them. GO CAPS!!!!

Very cool. Dan Jansen was skating coach for the Blackhawks a few years back. You'd be surprised how many guys need to have skating coaching to improve speed and stability. We (Dave & I) are big hockey fans and rarely miss a home game at the United Center for the Blackhawks.

I still play hockey from time to time.. I just don't have the time to commit to playing in a league right now.. I get more enjoyment from skating with my 4 year old daughter. we just started our son on ice skates and he's 2 1/2.

Wow Patti, being from the swampland of SC I don't know much about hockey but I know pretty when I see and that's some lucky boys!

Thank you Wally:) I have been blessed with two beautiful daughters (of course, I didn't always call it a blessing:rolleyes: - but they are finally grown and life has smoothed out a bit!)

Was good seeing you this weekend at CRA!
