I am still having a slight problem with looping. I have used the rope for about two weeks but now im trying him off it he still wants to loop and end up about four feet to my left of the line. I can give him a right hand back and he is almost perfectly on line when he turns around so im not sure if it should be a huge concern but i'm nit picky. any suggestions?

FOUR - as in "4" - feet! I don't see that as a problem...but that's just me... How long is your dog head to tail - say 3 feet give or take. You want to them to do a 180 degree turn running flat out in their body length?? I think you're ok.

So, he's looping on stops, or on casts? I'm not clear on what you're asking about.

at times both. on stops he will loop around as he is slowing down to a stop and then sits sometimes at an angle facing to my left. i will give hima few toots and we will take small steps to me and sit straight. and then sometimes on over casts he will come toward me as he is angling toward the bumper and then turn back and grab the bumper

And where is he in training? Is he out of Basics, or are in T work?

I have used a sit whistle with a low nic. In 2 weeks I had my young dog turning square and promplty. This worked for me. Now he turns and sits square to the line all of the time. After a couple of months he started to get lazy with his turns. 2 days of the whistle/nic and the issue has not returned in 5 months.
Give it a try...worked for my dog!!

But would you do that if your dog were just beginning T work? We don't know yet what training this dog has had. That may be a good treatment for some dogs, but not all.

he is beginning t work. i had been doing mini t with him on rope
I suggest two things. First, go back for more Mini-T on a rope, and make sure you sharpen those stops. A dog that stops sharply and promptly enough has no time to loop.

Second, force on all your casts in a 3-handed casting exercise. Low pressure nicks will do, and usually a single session is adequate.

The Lardy method is not to nick on sit whistle but to nick as soon as you see him acknowledge the sit whistle by slowing down, starting to turn, etc. But first work some more with rope. Lardy stays you should be able to stop the dog on the way to the pile, three times and the last time right in front of the pile before leaving FTP and moving on to T or TT.
