Hi guys,

I have a questions regarding my dog picking up bumpers and dummies incorrectly. He almost always picks it up by the end like a cigar. Dokkens he will like to pick up by the feet. Now, is this a big deal and how can I correct it? Will picking up the dokken by the feet transfer to the blind with real ducks?

Thanks,

How old is your dog? What training has he had?

Mine has the same issue.

Assuming yours has been FFd, you might try using a rubber mallet. It's just heavy and off-balance enough to encourage the dog to be particular about where he grabs the object.

I have also rigged a couple pieces of cardboard to go over the ends of the bumper where your dog has to grab it in the middle. Put in on the ground and give your dog a stern "no" if he tries to grab it anywhere but the middle. Mine did not take long to catch on and is doing much better.

My dog is also a very fast and very birdy dog, so some of his issues have to do with just getting in a hurry and not paying proper attention. I will likely always have a struggle with mine on this issue. And, honestly, I let it go too long without really correcting him for it as long as he was bringing the bumper back.

Hey,

I read somewhere an old trick to wrap metal wire around the end or legs of a dokken to deter them from picking up by the end. Would you guys do this? Or have you heard of this? It would be like wrapping little pieces of flexible wire to poke him if he grabs the feet...

Does he bring it back and deliver to hand?

I had a dog out of Cosmo that was FFd and still would like to hold the ends and even get a little sticky mouth with them. The more excited he got, the worse it got..... really not recommending this but he had so much go, I ended up wrapping a few ends of bumpers in barbed wire. It still took a few days but it fixed it.
