Do quail have as foul a smell as pigeons?
Depends on your numbers. A couple of pigeons and a couple of Quail will have little effect on the area. However 50 pigeons or 50 quail can make a mess. Pigeons can take way more abuse than quail. To answer your question it would depend on how many, what size and type of pen are you keeping them in and for how long.

Long as your house faces South and you have a strong South wind, maybe say 65mph min...

But yes, I keep 1 dozen pigeons with a dozen ducks all the time. D@mn possums....

Agree with all on the poop and smell. Another possible option: I have procured ducks from the many dairy's here in my area, and none have said no. Most are more than happy to let you take as may as you can catch . I used a fishing net. Gotta snag em between cows. Not sure if that is an option for you. The ones you get will be big--more like geese. Don't fly too good either. Nice for training. Hope that gives you another possible option.

well the smell of the ducks almost made the pregnant wife puke on the way home but now they are safe and sound at the back of our property. decided against putting them under our porch. question how do most feed/water the birds. these things have knocked over there tupperware bowls twice.

No tupperware in the great outdoors! Throw their food on the ground, as for water I would use something bigger and shallow...say a kiddie pool or just use bird waterers and wire them in place so they cant be knocked over
they are in a coop off the ground. predators around these parts. 4 feet up hardware cloth floors

Aw Blake!
Long day at work, home, feed dogs, cold beer, turn on the computer and this is very first thread that poops up for me. And I just laughed and laughed. I mean. I coulda been all teenager and just typed LOL but gosh dude. I am rolling here. So… What the heck is a smart girl like this doing with you! Kidding, I am, maybe?
I am very happy she has shown you the light, under the porch!;)
Now for your issue. Ducks kept only a week in a pigeon coup with cloth covering the raised wire may be easily feed with what most would call a brownie pan. The one inch deep by 12 by 14 baking pan we all have. One for feed and at least two for water. Now they are dirty nasty birds and they are going to poop in both the food and water but you only have them a week (yea right) so deal. Fresh pans morning and evening, you have livestock now. This will work. Feed less that you may think you need and give more water than you think they need.
And Blake,
We ain’t gonna lead you astray, mostly. Didn’t I tell ya? Didn’t we all?:p

yes ken i do wonder why she is with me most times, must be my stunning looks. thanks for the tip on the brownie pan. one of the pigeons has laid an egg. not really sure what to do with it. as they dont really have material to make nests. i made a shelf type roosting area but i guess maybe i should put pine straw and grass in there?

im not sure if u understood or not but by hardware cloth i mean the .5 inch wire fencing material. the smell isnt that bad anymore and if your over 5 yards away they are quiet and smell free. the reason i chose not to put it under the porch was because there is a slope there and id of had to do some intense measuring and cutting to get it level. instead i have it at the back under a tree where it can sit level with 4 foot legs all around

new update- these things are eating me out of house and home. i bought one of those plastic 7 pound feeders that feed by gravity. tube in the middle with inverted funnel feeding to a tray. they are eating pretty much 7 lbs of feed every day and a half. i feed a mix of around 4lbs wild bird seed (milo millet wheat safflower and cracked corn), 2.5 lbs cracked corn, and .5 lb poultry grit.

i bought a vacuum gravity waterer that is 1 gallon they are drinking all of it twice a day sometimes 3 times.

i'll be glad when saturday rolls around. i have 9 ducks remaining (2 of the 11 were used as flyers on sunday for a buddy). my other buddy will be claiming 6 as flyers for his dog. hopefully i can pawn the 3 remaining off on someone else to use as flyers. its funny saturday night i was telling my wife i dont know if i can watch these thing be killed its kind of sad. sunday was sad. this saturday i will gladly volunteer to throw or shoot.

the ducks are obviously the most annoying. they are loud, bossy, and hungriest. during the morning and night they pretty much stay on the open end of the coop and the pigeons claim the closed in section with roosting shelves. in the middle of the afternoon the pigeons get kicked out by the ducks so they can rest in the shade. 40% of the ducks food is on the ground along with the water i've tried putting plywood under the food but it ends up getting pooped on. they are so sloppy. they could learn a thing or two from the pigeons.

in other news i've been introing Moose to live pigeons (with wings folded back behind them). first day he wouldnt hold one for nothing would retrieve by wings. yesterday i figured out the pigeons were putting there feet in his mouth and scratching him. so now i hold there feet back and get him to hold it in his mouth he does pretty well. few of the birds have some skin or flesh showing but i think thats due to their bodies getting wet from his slobber and falling out.

some how the egg from saturday has disappeared no where in sight. and no signs of crushed egg shells on the ground (thought maybe the clumsy ducks stepped on it)

hee hee, I am lovin' this thread!
Your Farmin' and you know it!
didn't I say more water than you think they will need and less food?:D
They are going to try to eat all you put down and tread on and poop on the leftovers.

P.S. 2/3rds of your feed and water never make it inside the birds either... LOL for Ken. I feed mine daily so I(they) don't throw all the corn everywhere else.
