Ok guys, that time of year again. On the morrow at 6:41 a.m. goose season begins. Those that have been on this forum for years will remember this, I post it every year. For the new folk well you can read this to your kids tonight.

‘Twas The Night Before Goose Season.
by Ken Bora

‘Twas The Night Before Goose Season, and all through the land.
Not a waterfowler is sleeping, nobody can.
The Decoys are washed and the shotguns are ready.
But most are just hoping the dogs will be steady.
And I in my brand new thinsulate cap,
Had just settled down for I hoped a short nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter.
The dog sprang from my lap (UGH!)
to see what was the matter.
Away to the kitchen she flew like a flash.
Tore a hole through the screen and barked through the gash.

The Moonlight glistening off the freshly fallen dew,
Allowed me to see it was someone I knew.
It was my hunting partner that drove my dog so insane.
And he whistled, he shouted, he called her by name.
From the door of the truck to the walk up the steeps
With a purposeful stride, in the kitchen he went.

He was a great big, neoprened, camouflaged elf.
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.
We spoke not a word but went straight to our work.
Loading decoys, layout blinds and big wheeled garden carts.
He synched the last strap and then turned with a jerk.
And thrusting his hand way down in his pants.
“Whew” he exclaimed “Thought I’d forgotten my stamps”

As dry leaves before a hurricane fly.
Well that describes our early morning ride.
We arrived at the field long before it was light
A lone honk from above let me know
everything would be right.
We stood at the tailgate and talked for a while.
About dogs and decoy patters and calling styles.
But then it was time to go our separate ways.
As he was hunting the long blind, about a half mile away.
But I heard him exclaim as he walked out of sight.

Good luck one and all. Hunt safe and hunt right.

Happy hunting!

I am looking at around 120 honkers feeding & resting in my pond about 80 yards from our deck. They come in all through the winter to feed & rest - along with the deer & elk - it makes for great wildlife viewing within the city limits - a no discharge of firearms zone.
