Hi Folks,
I am interested in hearing from folks that have seen this dog work in the Field, and or have bred to him.
considering a puppy from him/ or breeding to him.
PM me.
Thanks so much in advance.

I will let you know in about a year...my pups by him were born yesterday...:D
I have not seen him run, but did meet him and put my hands on him. I bred to him for soundness, stucture and temperament.

I tried to send a private message but don't know if it was sent.

I have been in contact with Sam's owner and found the info regarding him very nice. I also know of someone who bred with him and will soon have puppies. I plan on going to see puppies.

I plan a spring breeding with Stormee.

Neil selby of Shady grove kennels bred his SH female to Sam and are expecting puppies as well, neil has been around this area for a long time so i am sure there is good reason as to why he bred to him.

Look up shady grove kennels in remington va and give him a call.

I have been looking for litters sired by Sam involving a bitch with a SH or MH. If anyone knows of any planned litters, please let me know.:D

I should have been more specific. A yellow bitch as I am looking to get a black female that carries yellow. My bad

I have used Sam in two of my breedings and could not be happier with the results!

The first time I decided to use him it was out of desire to do something different. I had been doing straight field line breedings with titled MH/SH dogs that had heavily field titled (FC/AFC/MH..etc) pedigrees. In my previous breedings I was getting some dogs that one owner described as "Einstein on crack!". Super talented and at times a super handful. Plus the looks were just not there. Felt like I was producing something closer to a curly tailed greyhound in the color black. So I went out on a limb two breedings ago and used Sam with my BLF who weighs in at 52-54lbs and is an incredibly talented dog. She has her SH title and has one MH pass, but is retired from the games. She comes from a star studded field pedigree.

So what did I get in the breeding? More then I expected. I train as well as breed so I had the fortune of training five of the 8 pups in the litter. I trained them on puppy programs between 4-6 months and again for formal training in the 8-18 month range. One of the pups I trained all the way thru handling and have the pleasure of seeing back on a regular basis for boarding. The owner of this dog is a avid hunter with lots of land to hunt on. One of the perks of breeding and training is all the invites. I have had the pleasure of hunting with this dog on both upland (pheasants) and waterfowl. He is well mannered in the blind (some of my straight field line breedings were creating some whiners....which I can't stand in a blind). The owner has also hunted this dog on chukars out in Nevada with good success.

My biggest fear in using Sam was loosing natural talent for field work. I was wrong. These pups came out as good or better in the intelligence department and very athletic. I picked up a little bone/structure, a little more hair coat, a slightly broader head (just a little), straighter tails and what I would consider a better on/off switch. They are pleasant to own when they are not busy doing something. One characteristic that came out in every pup was big water entries. I mean high flying belly splashes...they all do it. I attributed this to Sam as I had breed this same female previously to a different male and trained pups in that litter as well.

I was so impressed with the litter that I repeated it. I kept a female pup for myself and a male pup as a started dog project (which is sold). In addition I have had the pleasure of training three other pups in the litter. Both breedings came out very similar.

I feel I lost nothing in the talent/intelligence/field areas using Sam and picked up a lot of nice other traits and looks.

I have plans on using Sam again this winter/spring. The owners at Deep Run Kennels are very professional to work with.

Another CH/MH dog out there that is quite nice too if you are looking for yellow is Kerrybrooks Vince http://www.kerrybrooksvince.com/ Vince's owner Kenny is super nice to work with too.

We are also researching candidates to breed our "Grace" (yellow) with. Sam is on our Top 5 list for sure. I like Vince a lot but we've got to go black this time to keep pigmentation, etc. This thread has had some great info and I hope some Sam puppy pics emerge.

Good luck,

Wally

A couple of more things I have thought of since my intitial reply.

On some of Sam's pictures you will notice he has a bit of a "mane" look around his neck when he is all cleaned up and blown out. This definetely carried over in the pups...they all got it...a little less then his and you can only see it when the dogs have just been bathed and blown dry. I presonally like it and it really makes me see Sam in the pups. Overall the hair coat I got from breeding to him was outstanding.

Ear set....Sam has a bit of a high ear set and this carried over into the pups. Not drastic, but it is there.

Breeding him with a small field female....I ended up with a c section. With this female's previous litter I did not. Pups really did not look or weigh much different on day one, but both of my Sam litters needed a c section. One at the beginning and the second after pup #4.

I feel he brought some quietness into the pups. Less uncontrollable desire at the line.

All of the pups are fast running and extremely hard swimming...athletes! They all are a bit competitive amongst other dogs. A huge need to get to a thrown object first and if second then they like to take it. When you have two from the litter out in the water and throw a fun bumper they will just about drown each other trying to be the own to have it in their mouth. The best way to describe their behavior in the field is being competitive.

This is an interesting thread for those of us who lean towards the look of the "show" bred Labrador. My bitch, Alli (Ransom's Alegría at Reed Creek MH) just whelped a litter of 10 pups sired by HRCH UH CH Kerrybrook's Vince MH. The pups are only a week old, so other than to say that the litter appears to be of consistent type, similar coats, tails, heads, there is little I can tell about drive, birdiness, and intelligence; much less structure. But I have great hopes! Alli comes from a pedigree that has produced numerous Master Hunter/Champions. She herself has tons of drive, birdiness and intelligence; and I believe she is a bitch that could hold her own in the breed ring. Before I bred to Vince, I saw him run (for his MH in Atlanta) and put my hands on him. He and Alli are very similar in type. Alli is a bit more "over the top" than Vince; so I was looking to tone that down. His temperament was very important to me; plus it goes without saying that the clearances that both he and Alli have made the breeding almost a no brainer for what I was looking for. I am very excited to see how these little guys turn out, since Vince obviously possesses all the above traits. Alli is my foundation bitch, so this breeding was pretty important to me...I am looking for pups that have the potential to work in the highest levels of AKC Hunt Tests and yet move into the breed ring. We shall see how they develop. You can see pictures of the pups at www.reedcreeklabs.com; click on the “Puppies are Here” album - enjoy; I am sleep deprived and have nothing else to do while I am "puppy sitting" late at night - so I upload pictures:).

Yes, they both do have nice clearances; and while this is no guarantee; it's nice to have. I am hoping to keep a pup from this litter; will share the process.

Prospect, thanks for sharing those pics. Handsome pups.

Patti, that should be a very nice litter. I like Vince a lot. Looking forward to watching them grow.

Prospect those are adorable puppies and the older one is a handsome fellow for sure!

Wally, thanks, will keep you updated on how the litter is turning out. As I mentioned, I am excited about this litter and have "high hopes" for it!

Some more pictures. This group is of a female in the litter. The pictures start around 7-8 weeks of age and end around 1 year of age (to the best of my memory). The initial pics are mine and the later ones were sent to me by the owner. I wish I had some more current pictures as I saw this dog in October and it was looking quite nice.
