Had a conversation awhile ago with a group and this came up. Why is it people name their dogs after what we do, birds we hunt, or firearms we use. I'm not disrespecting anyone on what they name their dogs but just don't understand why people can't come up with original names
I was at a test once and there were 7 teal, 5 drakes, and 3 remmy's.
can you imagine being in a hunting blind and a male mallard comes in and someone says Drake and low and behold the dogs name is Drake. Can't end well.

I only have 2 dogs now but 1st golden when I was a teenager,
Jimminy: cuz his back legs were so long as a puppy he looked like a cricket when laying down.
Chili: A very reddish colored golden
Luna: Black lab mix I got when the moon was full on a dark February nite.
Finley: yellow lab male, Gaelic name for a fair haired companion or yellow haired warrior.

I try to be original, maybe those people just don't think about it that much. I'm kinda weird about names.

By the way for what ever reason my first name is Maria, I don't get it but its what my parents called me. Maybe that's why I'm so fussy, cuz of my own unusual name for an Irish/hungarian white chick.

I like original names Mine are Maize, Callie, and Willow. Never heard dogs named those till I joined here. Now my new pup is Loki hawian for Rose just hope she doesn't turn out for the other meaning "God of mischief".

I had a kid pick up his pup last week and was so glad to hear his mom had vetoed the original name he came up with when he picked her out, sweet pea. I guess Bella is a little better. Another kid that got a litter mate named his Emma. Almost as bad as when I had to go to the line at a ht with a peanut and a spirit.

Ducks and guns are certainly popular retriever names! Makes sense, I guess. Dog names are so personal, they only need to mean something to the owner. In the last 20 years, I've had:

Hemlock
Cedar
Alder
Camas
Bergamot
Maple

my first dog that I got for myself is named belle and being from the south (and being single at the time) I wanted a true southern Belle and she lives up to the name loves being around people and getting a lot of attention and can be a drama queen when she wants to be but doesn't mind getting dirty to get a duck and loves laying on the dock next to me when we are relaxing.

I believe the uniqueness comes into play with the registered name and not the call name. Only so many names one can call a dog, so repeats at a hunt test doesn't surprise. Things that are important to the owner usually end up in the dogs name somehow whether it is guns, ducks etc.
I have had a. Ty, Babe, Lou, Josie, and now a Hank.

This is our latest addition- Khaaleesi from the character on the Game of Thrones TV show. Our other two Goldens are Taylor, named for my favorite guitar, and Bump. He was named due to the fact they overbooked the flight when we went to pick him up. Had to rent a car to finish the journey, then to arrive at the hotel to find it overbooked as well. Had to go to a different hotel. Hence the name Bump.

Ours are: Gumbo, Bunny, and Blew. We have a non-retriever named PC.

Well, when Gumbo makes a mistake, I am sure a quick name change comes to mind. Dumb Bunny is just to easy to resist. When Blew blows it, things come to mind not worth mentioning because they are not PC.

I took the first letter of my 3 daughters and added an "a". Her name is LEAH (lindsay, Emma and Hannah). Her registered name is Taken By Storm, Leah. The day we picked her up we had a wicked thunderstorm. Some roads on the way home were flooded. Also fitting that the word storm comes up in other dogs in her pedigree.

We have Fly the Wonderdog who goes by "Fly." My daughter named her after the mother dog in the movie Babe. So then we got a male, and had to name him "Rex" (the jury is still out on the registered name) since that was the male dog's name in the film. Now we *might* be keeping one of Fly's pups and we'll probably have to name the darn thing after that pig.

My buddy Mark Buckmaster names all his dogs after him, he has had Bob Buckmaster, George Buckmaster and other Buckmaster dogs I can't remember. My first dog was named Kula, she was born on Maui, then I had Kimo, Hawaiian for Jim, Cody (Topbrass Wildfire Cody) Cody is a popular Montana Name and it ties in with his pedigree, Yoda (Topbrass New Millennium), Gus (Topbrass Montana Lonesome Dove), Alex (Things That are Red for 500) and Muddy, (Swan Rivers Got My Mojo Work'n). I appreciate fun original names, but don't really care what other's name their pets.

We drove 8 hours to Missouri from KY to get our first hunting dog. So " Journey " is her name. Both for the drive and for being the first time training a dog. Last name Sutton, so her full name is Suttons Mizzou Journey.

Smokey was named because I was newly married and always wanted a black lab name Smokey. Callie (another black lab) was voted on and named by the kids. Now we are empty nesting and our new Yellow Lab is named Mardi because she is from Louisiana and named for her state -Mardi Gras.

Buster, Bucky, Bosun, Breaker (a GSD... horrible name for a retriever) Bitsy, Beezer, and Bridget.

I like a hard consonant for the send name. If not a "B" then a "D", Dutch and Deirdre

Wish there weren't so many Chocolates named "Hershey" (sheesh). And I'm kinda over yellows named "Chabli" and "Chardonnay".
