Talking about "lines" in dog breeding, when people talk about outcrossing, aren't most labs in the U.S. " way back" derived from a relatively small gene pool to begin with? If you go back 60 or 70 years.

You hear talk of "bottle necking" when some popular stud is used a lot in recent times. I wonder how many dogs are at the beginings of most pedigrees.

Anyone ever research pedigrees all the way back to the 30's and 40's? I would think someone did, any books that have it?

I've read about the old noteworthy dogs that are the foundation of today's dogs, but were there many others that made the beginnings that did't get written about?

Curious,
John

Yes many of the good dogs were inbred. You can find The complete Labrador Retriever by Helen Warwick that goes into some of the older field kennels.
