I am looking for a space saving idea to take water to hunt tests. I drive an SUV and have 2 dogs to take. The hunt tests I attend are not close so an overnight stay is required. I currently use 2 5gallon containers.
I have seen the thread about the pvc container and the water tube at LCS. Do those leak? Is there another economical way to take water without taking up storage space for the cooler and luggage?

You are probably taking 5 gallons too much. I use a 2.5 gallon plastic gasoline can for 1 dog and have never run out... even in the summer. But if you get low by Saturday night, you can easily refill at the motel. But I would think 5 gallons for 3 dogs would be plenty.

Works for me.

I made PVC tubes for my wifes midsize truck (Dakota). Ran them from the dog box back to the tailgate (40", by 4" diameter). They hold about 3 gallons each. I used the heavier grade of PVC, so it'd stand up to abuse. They would probably hold half a gallon or more extra, if you used thinner PVC. You could use a larger diameter if you wanted also.

Another thing that we do is fill Gatorade bottles with water, and freeze them. They serve a dual purpose of Ice in the cooler, and Ice Water at the trial, or camping, or whatever.

Hey BBnumber1, in addition to ice water, I use those frozen liter bottles to place in the box behind a fan in the summer. Instant A/C, very important down here in the jungle lands!

Before the dog box came along I used a 5 gal. water jug, that lasted long enough, plus for the cooler I would freeze 1 gal milk jugs, that water could also be used for the dogs. With a stainless steel cooler the frozen milk jugs and a bag of ice will go all weekend long without the need to find a store for more ice. Any water in the cooler bottom can also be used to water the dogs.

I use a 5 gallon Coleman water jug that has a spigot. It is square and is quite compact. It will last two labs up to three days if it isn't too hot. The last time I checked Dick's Sporting Goods had them for around $13. You can also use it for your own use. If it looks like you are going to run short you can start topping it off at the motel.
