My problem is a very Hyper 10 month old choc lab pup. I have had dogs that were very active. But this pup is wide open all the time. I have an older dog that she torments constantly when they are together. She has even pulled out her hair on the older dogs back, jumped on her head while she was laying down resting and just on and on. I have started chaining her when I let the other dog out. She runs constantly when not on leash or with my ecollar on. My son gave her to me just before he left for his second tour in Iraq so I have a connection i cant explain with her. One thing is, she is a retrieving machine. She would climb italian marble for a dummy or bird. She is soft mouthed and literally cuts head over heel flips when going after bumpers. She loves water and been diving off the bank or out of my boat since she was 4 mos. old. You can tell she isnt getting the mark or signal by looking at her eyes. Just way off no matter how you do it. There are some really great trainers on this forum that I respect a lot. Question.... Is she worth keeping and hoping she calms down enough to hunt and trial(local club stuff). I take her out dove hunting and its a constant struggle to keep her still. Like I said she runs until she drops from exhaustion. She will sit on command like boom. Just not for long. I personally would not like a dog that was 'on' all the time..but that is me. 
Different strokes ...
Is there anyway you can road this dog (ie, run her with a four wheeler or bicycle)...
Because she is your son's dog, yes, keep her! Hopefully people who have been in your shoes with this type of character can give you some good tips...
