As stated above, do not force him onto the water. I had a pointer many years ago that I was training for upland game. I took him into the field with another trainer (not much of one apparently although he has trained some very good dogs), not to hunt just to get used to cover, he was 5 months old. The other trainer (I was new to the process at the time) asked if he had been in the water yet which he had but had not swum. So he walked the dog out onto an old dock and pushed him in. Ruined him on water forever.

Take your time when the water is warm and he will eventually love it.
