I stumbled upon this forum while trying to figure out some of the lingo used in field training. And am I ever glad I found it.
I am Jean and live in eastern Washington. I have been training and competing in obedience and agility since about 1996. I went to a couple of hunt tests and WC/WCX’s in the past few years and thought it looked like a really nice new challenge. However, the dogs I had were not thinking the same thing and being older dogs I decided not to pursue it.
The opportunity came up last summer to get a pup from a very nice Golden field line and I jumped on it. Since the day she came home, it has been a joy to train her. We started in obedience and agility right away but by the time I got around to thinking about field, the Pro I wanted to use was heading south for the winter months. Long story short, in June I finally hooked up with him and we started training the field obedience and collar conditioning. My plan was to do the force fetch myself with his guidance but that thought rapidly went away. And after using the search on this forum, I am glad I made the decision to send her to him. The timing and reading of the dog is so critical and in my case, for this I did not have it.
So now she is up with the pro, something I said I would never do, and it sounds like she is handling it well. And it is giving me way too much time to peruse the files in this great forum. I am learning so much from you all, past threads and current and I thank you.
