Kennel cough question please

Eight LONG days ago our first labrador became symptomatic of kennel cough. As each day passed, yet another, until finally all 5. The last a couple of days ago, our 13 year old labrador who does not seem as badly affected.

All are up to date with C5. From my information there are many strains of KC some of which are viral, others bacterial.

As the symptoms were quite severe (coughing++++++, vomiting saliva and food - the mess!!! Vets said to keep the dogs warm - so all inside 24 hours per day), antibiotics were prescribed in case the KC strain was bacterial and in the hope of secondary problems not occurring. Benadryl cough medicine was also given.

Finally my question: It has been suggested by friends, that anti inflammatories can help, when symptoms are at their worst.

Our 13 year old is treated with Rimadyl from time to time for her arthritis. I cannot help noticing her KC symptoms are much less than the other five, who are improving. Sure, she might be less affected, but I cannot help wondering if the anti-inflammatory medication has somehow helped?

Thanks Dale.

As it is Saturday here, my favourite vets are not available. I will check with them in time, regarding their thoughts.

When I spoke to the vets a few days ago they suggested if symptoms persisted, change of antibiotic may be required, but as the dogs are now just dry coughing I did not bother the poor souls yesterday.

A month before a long awaited trial. Oh well, such is life.
