We ran setters in all-age trials for years. Pointers absolutely dominate both entries and victories. My grandfather started with pointers in the 40's and did very well. In the 70's he got a setter named Long Gone Sam and that was it. Granted Sam was a once in a lifetime dog, but he saw something he liked better than in any pointer he had owned. He wanted to instill those superior traits in the setter breed. He won a lot. I think a lot of chessie and golden breeders see something in their dogs THEY like more than Labs. Having a superlative individual dog can make someone want to improve the breed.

That's a good thing. That's the point of all of these events and should be the point of all litters. Improving the breeds. Otherwise we could just clone Lean Mac and we'd all run him.
