so long story short make sure to keep them gates closed. yesterday I am coming home from work and I am just about to pull into my driveway and a dog jumps in front of my truck. I'm not going very fast at all. slammed on my breaks and connect with him get out to look for the dog and he is gone. I figured there no way that's my dog drake. any way I park my truck and run inside to see if drake is in there. the wife tell me she just let the them out. my stomach drops. I run out back and see the gates was blown open in the wind storm. I run to the road and call him he wont come. I was able to find drake in my neighbors yard. obviously he is scared and shaking. so I pick him up and carry him to my house. as soon as I set him down his adrenaline kicked in and starts to run around. so I grab the keys and run to the er vet. thank god everything was ok. he just has a small scrap on his hip and a small cut above his eye. I thought I had almost lost my buddy. one of the scariest things ever. so please guys make sure those gates are closed so the dogs cant get out and run around.

We just went thru the same scenario this morning. We had a crew of tree trimmers here yesterday. Dogs were crated inside while workers went in and out of backyard hauling branches and brush. Husband Joe was helping. This morning, Joe opens kitchen shades and sees yellow and chocolate boy out front. Where's the old black boy? The yellow and brown boy come when called but where is OAK, the old one? Joe gets on Kubota and circles around back of acreage. We have 15 acres of woods. 15 minutes later, Joe drives up with the old guy in the cab of the Kubota.

We let the dogs in the backyard several times a day. The gate had been unfastened all afternoon and night. The old black boy is notorious for checking doors to see if they're not completely closed. He's made a few Great Escapes. This would have been terrible if they got out at night during their last potty call. Who knows where they would have wandered off to.

Thats one of the reasons I'm a one woman show here too! I am so ANAL about the gate being closed- I have told clients who forgot - simply " You need to go shut the gate", before I say hello or anything else.
Gates keep dogs alive- I'm so glad your situation didnt turn out differently.!

We keep our gates padlocked. But have to leave them open for service people. My fault, I slammed a gate the other day and it didn't latch. The wind blew it open. I went in the back yard to get Shadow and Rowdy. They escaped. I drove around the neighborhood. As soon as they saw my truck they came running. I guess freedom wasn't all that great.

I'm paranoid too, and like Karen, a one woman show. Everyone who knows me knows if my gates are closed, I'm home, and to call first to let me know they are coming. I put all mine in crates before the gates get opened. All it takes is a covey of quail to walk down the easement out front and mine are on a mission. You may want to watch for any signs of soreness and maybe get him checked by a holistic vet cert'd in chiro just in case too. Doesn't take much to throw those pups out of alignment.

I am glad your dogs is ok. My dog was not so lucky. My show champion chocolate out of a long line of show champion master hunters was staying with my sister. One of the kids forgot to close the gait and he got out and was hit by a car and killed.
