I'm curious if anyone has treated their lab for mange? Supposedly this is a type of mange they get from their mother and not contagious to other dogs. I treat for heartworm with ivomec and vet says that usually takes care of this type of mange.
The vet gave me some med you mix a half of bottle with a gallon of water. Bathe once a week for 3 weeks and will supposedly take care of it. The vet said this will knock her down some. My question is how much will this effect my dog? I have 2 hunt tests coming up over the next few weeks. The vet said go ahead and run her. Has anyone ever experienced this and how much did it set the dog back?

There are 2 kinds of mange that I know of .... what does your dog have

If it's demodex, the demodex mite is present in all dogs. It presents when the immune system is compromised. When my GSP presented, my vet assured me it was not contagious and it never presented in my labs.

Yes I have .... go ahead and spay her as she is not a quality breeding subject.

Usually a healthy dog with an intact properly functioning immune system keeps any demodex mites well under control. This is a type of mite normally present on many dogs, that spreads ONLY via direct bodily contact(demodex mites cannot stay alive off a dog). Demodectic mange is sometimes seen in whole litters of puppies, and therefore incorrectly attributed to have been genetically passed on. Puppies are in such constant close contact with their dam and each other, so any mites present on dam are sure to be transferred. Puppies immature immune systems may be unable to cope with these demodex mites that are not an issue for a healthy adult dog. Several years ago, I had a dog develop a mild spot(about size of a nickel) of demodectic mange shortly after a very severe acute case of either lyme or another tick borne disease. She was treated with Revolution and has never had a reoccurence. Revolution, a topical flea and tick med can knock out this type of mild case of demodetic mange, such as a few small localized spots(often first seen on the face). Sometimes my vet says they may recommend a second topical Revolution dose in 2wks, rather than the usual monthly dose specifically for this condition. As with ANY medical issue....always consult your own veterinarian A case of generalized demodectic mange with numerous and/or large affected areas, can take extensive treatment to control Such an affected dog should NOT be used for breeding. Not because of the mange(which is not genetic), but because of the indicated impaired immune system(which IS genetic) and which is demonstrated by the presence of such mange. Personally, I would not run a severely affected dog in a test. Not because of transmission of mites, but because since its immune system is obviously impaired. I would want to reduce any stress on the affected dog and try to avoid any exposure to further diseases, germs and viruses.

There are folks that know little or nothing about the types of mange. Run the dog if you want but expect some negative feedback at the test. Good opportunity for education if you can stand the heat.

Fish duck from reading about it it seems my dog has localized demodex. She has a few spots about the size of a dime. She was moved from the kennel to the house a few months ago. I'm kinda wondering if that didn't trigger it somehow. My vet said stress can cause it. She's still young (16 months). We'll see what happens . Thanks for the replies.

Most specialists think that localized Demodex is self limiting and does not need to be treated, that being said both Bravecto and Nexgard are effective treatments for Demodectic mange.

The dip you were given is probably amitraz and is neurotoxic if not handled properly, I no longer use it for that reason. Bravecto and Nexgard are tablets for tick and flea prevention and have revolutionized the treatment of Demodectic mange.

I'm pretty sure I was given nexguard and the dip. I already gave her the nexguard. I may just try that then. Like I said she just has a few spots. I brought her in for a rabies vaccine and had him look at the spots.

Just went through this with a bitch of mine. Demodex mites all around the left eye. Nexguard took care of it. Took about 6-7 weeks to heal and for the hair to grow back.

Did you read the original post. Damn people I would scratch the dog if there were any harm to other dogs. Your dog already has this it just doesn't affect him/her. And the age of the dog was already mentioned. No not jr.

Post #10 has the dogs age. To each his own but I'll run the dog after taking flea and tick medication that's exactly what Bravecto is. And if I decide to use the dip ,vet said it was no problem to run her. What difference does it make what she's staked in anyways?

WTH difference would it make what stake he wants to run? Geez people amaze me sometimes.... run your dog a the tests and have fun.
