During the summer heat and humidity... is it common for eyes to mat up more often?

I do not think matted eyes are ever normal. Is your dog outside where the flies can get to it?

Probably a seasonal allergy. Talk to your vet but you can give benedryl and zyrtec for allergies.

I have had dogs who had eye irritations from running through high grass and I usually wash their eyes out after with sterile eye wash.

My pup has a little eye irritation. I've been trying to use the drops the vet recommended. I think she would rather have itchy eyes.

Dog allergies are not like human allergies for the most part. When a dog is allergic it usually manifests itself in skin, ear or eye issues. Benedryl is good for bee stings and the such but I wouldn't use it unless there is abnormal swelling.

My question is what exactly is "Matted Up"? Do you mean a slight discharge, if so this is normal for some dogs due to pollin levels, especially pine trees and seeded grasses in the spring and summer and this year has been a bear for both me and the dogs. Is this your pup or the older dog?
