Question for all you architech junkies and vikings fans.....
So the dome collapsed, or deflated is a better description judging from the footage I saw. The 3-4 time in the 30 or so years it has been open. I understand that there are other reasons for needing/wanting a new stadium, but I have been hearing all sorts of pundiffs pontificating as to how the collapse points to a desperate need for a new stadium.
My question is "Is once every ten years, a non violent, repairable collapse of the inflatable dome a reason to NEED a new stadium"
Points:
I would assume this type of roof is FAR less expensive to build. and much less expensive to repair
Perhaps a "double Shell" could be built, so that in severe snow storms a super hot air can be blown between the two to melt the snow off of the roof.
When the dome currently "collapses" it is ratehr non violent is comparison to the collapse of upper decks that collapse (lincolns memorial stadium several years ago), or peices of roof that collapse that create falling concrete and metal on other dome structures (seattle). Seems the stadium could have been full of people in that case, and other then where the snow fell, no one would have been hurt. And there were warning signs that would have cleared the stadium prior to that anyway....
BTW, I would not want to play baseball in the metro dome, but I would rather play Baseball in the metrodome then outside in april/late october in Minneapolis.
Just wondering.....
