Hello. I just bought Total Retriever Training on advice from a friend, but after watching the "Basics" dvd's I was discouraged that there is very little detail in how to train your dog in formal obedience. All I really saw was a guy walking around with a lab in front of an audience but not showing how he actually taught the dog to follow his commands, and the steps involved. What I need are step by step instructions since I've never trained a dog. Is there somewhere else I should look on the DVD's for more detailed instruction, or did I buy something that is way over my head? Thank you for any advice.

If you don't have TRT 2d edition I can understand your confusion. The original TRT is older than dirt. TRT 2 is a must. Most people were giving them away after trt2 came out, I did. There are several good training programs on the market. The most talked about are:
TRT 2, Mike Lardy
Smartworks, Evan Graham
Fowl Dogs, Rick S.
I use TRT 2. Some beginners find Smartworks easier for them. I don't know much about Fowl Dogs. If you do a search on these dvds there is plenty of information on this forum about them.

Sound Beginnings, Jackie Mertens
Training a Retriever Puppy, Bill Hillman
